Celebration of cinema has always been extended by the Oscars honoring the prowess of cinematic excellence with one of the most recognized accolades. Throughout the rich history of cinema, there have been several movies based on true events, that left a mark among moviegoers or in the pages of history.
A still from Lawrence of Arabia
Also, movies that are based on true events are another way of documenting the particular incident, albeit a portion of fictionalization may alter the accuracy, but for cinema’s sake, filmmakers enjoy the basic freedom to have their own touch to the narrative. Throughout history, movies like The Great Ziegfeld by Robert Z. Leonard, or it would be criminal not to mention David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia, and several other movies have claimed the Best Picture Oscars. Here is a list of six movies that won an Oscar in the Best Picture category.

David Seidler, the London-born playwright and screenwriter best known for “The King’s Speech,” has died while on a fly-fishing vacation in New Zealand, as per a report in The Guardian. His spokesperson said he was in the location he most revered, doing the activity he most loved when he passed: “It is exactly as he would have scripted it.” The winner of the Academy Award and BAFTA for Best Original Screenplay for the Colin Firth-led film was 86 years old.
Seidler’s career began in Australian television in the late 1960s. He came to the United States in the early 1980s, working for the soap opera “Another World,” then writing television movies like “Malice in Wonderland,” something of an early version of the series “Feud” as it concerned Hedda Hopper and Louella Parsons starring Jane Alexander and Elizabeth Taylor. In 2011, I watched Contagion and found it a gripping thriller with an all-star cast–Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Elliott Gould, Jude Law, Marion Cotillard, Kate Winslet, Bryan Cranston, Jennifer Ehle, Sanaa Lathan, and Gwyneth Paltrow–then promptly stopped thinking about it. I was, though, reminded of it in 2021 when the global pandemic became a reality.
And yet, Warner Home Entertainment skipped the obvious 10th anniversary in favor of finally releasing the 4K Ultra HD edition. It’s a stunning disc and well worth your attention.
From director Steven Soderbergh and writer Scott Z. Burns, we have a now-eerily familiar situation that a weary world is hardly prepared for. As the camera casually pans across the empty spaces and we see only masked faces, it feels more like memory than fiction. We can admire how accurately they projected what a modern pandemic might be like and you would have thought more...

Jennifer Ehle has been cast in Jaclyn Bethany’s queer indie drama “In Transit.”

“Through their relationship, both women must confront their preconceptions of what makes a good life,” reads the logline.
Sarrigeorgiou will play Lucy while Francois Arnaud (“Yellowjackets”) is set to play Lucy’s boyfriend Tom, a local chef.
The film goes into production this month with principal photography commencing in Damariscotta, Maine before moving to New York City in February.
Marin Hope cast the project.
Emmy nominee Bethany (“Tell That to the Winter Sea”) directs and produces for Bke Productions alongside C.C. Kellogg of Valmora Productions, Sarrigeorgiou for Little Language Films and Sarah Keyes.

Of life’s many mysteries, few are as powerful or as complicated as religion and death. Are we alone at the moment we cease to live or will there be someone waiting for us on the other side? Who pulls the strings that guide our lives and what will they require from us during our time among the living? There are as many different answers to these questions as stars in the sky and how we answer them often reveals more about ourselves than any higher power.
With such mysterious forces at play, it’s no wonder religion and death occupy so much of the genre landscape. Catholic horror movies abound with many tackling demonic forces attempting to invade innocent bodies. But few films present such an intimate portrait of penance and pain as Rose Glass’ Saint Maud. This bleak film follows Maud (Morfydd Clark) a young in-home nurse as...

“You up for playing outside the lines?” Nicole Kidman asks an undercover agent in the first full trailer for Special Ops: Lioness, the latest series from Taylor Sheridan to hit Paramount+. While Sheridan is best known now for his Yellowstone franchise, this trailer offers a reminder that he was also the writer behind Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario, and Lioness looks much more in that vein.
The show follows Joe, a CIA operative played by Zoe Saldaña, who works for what is known as the Lioness Program, run by Kidman’s Kaitlyn Meade and Donald Westfield (Michael Kelly). Saldaña recruits Marine Raider Cruz (Laysla De Oliveira). “You have no family, you have no friends, you were abused until you gave yourself to me,” Joe tells Cruz. “Now you have a purpose and it is noble.” Joe and Cruz head into a “situation unfolding in real time,” where they work to stop an impending terrorist attack.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we revisit limited, where the supporting categories will have seven slots again.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’ve reached the final push before next month’s nominations: Emmy voting is happening right now and the 2023 ballots were a boon to actors competing for attention in the limited series supporting actor and actress races. This year, like last year, there will be seven slots in those categories — meaning it just got a whole lot more likely that our favorite stars from “Beef,” “Black Bird,” “Love & Death,” and “Monster” will score deserved nominations. I went ahead and added Michael Learned to my supporting actress picks, and I know you’ve had the “Monster” star in there for weeks. The extra slot...

With James Mangold’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” making its out-of-competition Cannes bow on Thursday, the good people at Lucasfilm are offering up a compensatory prize to everyone suffering from Fomo. To get you ready for the June 30 release of the new film, the previous entries of the Indy canon will soon be available on Disney +.
True heads already know the movies can be viewed on Paramount+ but, no diss to our friends at that fine institution (especially everyone involved with “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds”), it’s fair to say that Disney+ has a bigger market share.
The big day is May 31. Home viewers will be able to watch Harrison Ford in the O.G. “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” (which is now called “Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark”), the 1981 masterpiece with the single greatest action sequence in all of cinema.

This article contains some potential spoiler details from the novel Tom Jones and its TV adaptation.
Tom Jones, Masterpiece PBS’s latest period drama miniseries team-up with historical storytelling powerhouse Mammoth Screen and U.K. network Itvx, is a romantic comedy blended in with sharp commentary on class and morality in mid-18th century Britain. The show is the first television adaptation of the classic novel of the same name by Henry Fielding.
Fielding’s novel tells the story of Tom (Solly McCleod), an illegitimate child of a maid who was adopted by Squire Allworthy (James Fleet). He grows up among the gentry but is constantly reminded of his frowned-upon low origins. Tom also ends up befriending some of the working-class residents nearby as well. His childhood friend Blifil (James Wilbraham) is set to inherit a large estate but eventually, he becomes Tom’s rival as his parents arrange to...

“We wanted to, of course, pay homage to the original, but also kind of make it our own,” explains production designer Erin Magill about the process behind “Dead Ringers,” an Amazon Prime limited series that reimagines the 1988 film directed by David Cronenberg. “It was most important to me to keep that heightened sense of tense thriller and horror throughout, but of course now through this feminist lens and female perspective. And so I think while we took bits of the original, there were a lot of female artists and architects and photographers.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Magill above.
The original “Dead Ringers” told the story of twin gynecologists played by Jeremy Irons. This 2023 version flips the gender script with Rachel Weisz playing both Beverly and Elliot Mantle, who push the boundaries of their field in ways that aren’t always ethical — or legal.

Created by Alice Birch and inspired by the 1988 film by David Cronenberg, “Dead Ringers” gives us two main characters for the price of one. Rachel Weisz plays Beverly Mantle and Elliot Mantle, a pair of identical twin gynecologists with an unhealthy attachment to each other. But while they may be on a path of self-destruction, their dysfunction could pay off at the Emmys, which love actors playing multiple roles.
Sally Field (“Sybil”) and Toni Collette (“United States of Tara”) both won for playing characters with dissociative identity disorder — colloquially known as multiple personality disorder. More recently Mark Ruffalo (“I Know This Much is True”) took home a trophy for playing troubled twins. And in daytime, Erika Slezak (“One Life to Live”) famously won six Emmys, including prizes for playing her character’s alternate personalities.

In a show that centers on a twisted relationship between brilliant, codependent twins, Rebecca Parker and Susan also play an intriguing duo.
Dead Ringers, Amazon Prime Video’s six-part limited series that reimagines David Cronenberg’s psychological thriller, centers on the Mantle twins, identical world-renowned gynecologists Beverly and Elliot who are played by Oscar winner Rachel Weisz in a double lead role. The feminized series from creator Alice Birch thrusts the 1988 story into modern day as the Mantles (who were played by Jeremy Irons in the movie) set out to revolutionize childbirth. With that goal comes another twisted relationship with the business of maternal health, and that’s where Rebecca Parker, played by Jennifer Ehle, and her fourth wife, Susan, played by Emily Meade, come in.

Rachel Weisz is both executive producer and star of Amazon Prime Video’s limited series “Dead Ringers.”
“It’s a psychosexual thriller about codependence,” the Oscar-winner told Variety at the show’s New York City premiere. “It’s twisted and entertaining and darkly humorous.”
A modern take on David Cronenberg’s 1988 classic film, Weisz plays twin doctors who share an unapologetic desire to push the boundaries on medical ethics as they challenge antiquated birthing practices to bring women’s health care to the forefront.
Simultaneously juggling the characters of Elliot and Beverly Mantle, the sisters are gender-swapped in the remake of the movie that starred Jeremy Irons as the twin doctors.
As a producer, Weisz says she was “involved in it from beginning to end” with Emmy-nominated writer and playwright Alice Birch, who served as showrunner.

On April 21, 2023, Prime Video released “Dead Ringers” with Rachel Weisz pulling double duty as twin doctors performing questionable procedures on women that are infertile. The limited series executive produced by Weisz, Alice Birch, Anne Carey, Sean Durkin, Megan Ellison, Sue Naegle, and Erica Kay is based upon the 1988 film of the same name directed by David Cronenberg.
The limited series opened to rave reviews, holding fresh at 88% on Rotten Tomatoes with a critics’ consensus that reads, “If ‘Dead Ringers’ doesn’t wield as cutting a blade as David Cronenberg’s original chiller, it’s not a pale imitation either, thanks to Rachel Weisz putting on a clinic in doppelgänger duplicity.” The ensemble cast includes Michael Chernus, Poppy Liu, Britne Oldford, Jennifer Ehle, Emily Meade, and Jeremy Shamos. Let’s see what specific reviewers have had to say.

No one could be blamed for a chronic case of reboot fatigue, nor a wariness of recasting for recasting’s sake. Interpreting known characters across race and gender lines is promising in theory, but all too often executed without much intention — a hasty, lazy substitute for a fresh take on the source material. “Dead Ringers,” the new limited series from Amazon Prime Video, is not such a case. Riffing on the David Cronenberg film of the same name, the show swaps in Rachel Weisz for Jeremy Irons as a pair of codependent gynecologists. Unlike so many of its peers, “Dead Ringers” reaps ample rewards from its central switch, preserving Cronenberg’s signature strangeness while taking the premise to new, surprising heights.

Thirty-five years after David Cronenberg’s “Dead Ringers” made a pioneering splash in the body horror film genre, Prime Video’s new Rachel Weisz-led series is anything but a “straight remake.”
“It’s such an incredible iconic film, and we never wanted to do a straight remake, or anything other than really just pay homage, but also find our own storyline,” creator Alice Birch told TheWrap. “It’s really all about the twins.”
The thriller series follows Elliot and Beverly Mantle — twins played by Weisz with the same name as the leads in the 1988 flick — whose co-dependence seeps into virtually each segment of their life. In the film, the twins played by Jeremy Irons worked as gynecologists; Weisz’s Beverly and Elliot work as obstetricians.
The more reserved Beverly is content with delivering babies as she tries for her own, while Elliot is focused on pushing the boundaries of maternal health into unethical territory.

Alice Birch adapts David Cronenberg’s 1988 film “Dead Ringers,” swapping the male twin gynecologists with female ones, exploring the world of womanhood and pregnancy in an intrinsic manner rather than sticking to the concept of “twins” as the original film does. Gory, disturbing, repugnant, chaotic, and sexy are some words that come to mind to describe the six-episode mini-series. This is a fair warning for the squeamish because, along with a lot of blood and body horror, there are many birthing scenes that are rather uncomfortable to watch. Don’t expect to leave anything to your imagination because there is no holding back in “Dead Ringers.” The term “baby sister” will never be the same again.
“Dead Ringers” follows the Mantle twins (Rachel Weisz), Beverley and Elliot (same as in the 1988 film), who are genius gynecologists by profession. Ridiculously, along with sharing a profession, they also share partners—essentially everything in life.

Amazon’s six-episode limited series adaptation of David Cronenberg’s 1988 feature Dead Ringers isn’t a perfect series, but in at least three key ways it’s a perfect piece of intellectual property mining.
First, series creator Alice Birch (Normal People) has a clear reason for wanting to tackle Cronenberg’s twisted tale of identical twin gynecologists, using the added narrative real estate of television and the passing of 35 years as fodder for an examination of reproductive freedom and the fertility industry that’s entirely its own. It’s a spectacular thematic vehicle.
Of equal importance, Dead Ringers is a spectacular acting vehicle, and in Elliot and Beverly Mantle, Rachel Weisz has the best role, or dual roles, of her decorated career, a mixture of uncompromising intensity, bleak humor and extended heartbreak that’s as satisfying to watch as it clearly was to play.
And, finally, and this might be...

Review: The 1988 thriller Dead Ringers starred Jeremy Irons in the dual roles of Elliot and Beverly Mantle, identical twin gynecologists who succumb to vanity, addiction, and obsession. The film is one of director David Cronenberg’s more restrained productions yet still features disturbing body horror imagery in a unique take on Bari Woods’ novel Twins. The film is one of director David Cronenberg’s more restrained productions yet still features disturbing body horror imagery in a unique take on Bari Woods’ novel Twins. It is hard to imagine how anyone could remake Dead Ringers without existing in the shadow of Cronenberg’s film. Yet, showrunner Alice Birch and star Rachel Weisz have stunningly reinvented the tale with...

Showrunner Alice Birch (Lady Macbeth, The Wonder) and actor/executive producer Rachel Weisz (Constantine, The Mummy, The Lobster) give a contemporary, gender-swapped spin on David Cronenberg’s psychological thriller Dead Ringers, based on the novel Twins by Bari Wood and Jack Geasland. Weisz assumes the dual role of twin gynecologists Elliot and Beverly Mantle, played to creepy perfection by Jeremy Irons in the 1988 film, signaling a vastly different take on the source material. While Birch and Weisz maintain respect for Cronenberg’s work throughout, “Dead Ringers” establishes it has no interest in retreading the same path.
Beverly and Elliot Mantle share everything. They do everything together, right down to their ambitious career pursuits in blazing a path forward for women’s health, namely reproductive health, even if their methods can be risky or boundary-pushing in their experimentation. Yet they couldn’t be further apart in personality, reflected in their style choices.

As we have seen in years past, it isn't exactly easy to replicate the appeal and artistry of David Cronenberg. This is especially true when his work gets remade or reworked, such as 1989's "The Fly II" or 2019's "Rabid." As such, the idea of remaking "Dead Ringers," which is primarily considered one of the director's best works and features one of star Jeremy Irons' best performances, is equally weird and intriguing. However, thanks to Prime Video and showrunner Alice Birch, a new reimagining starring Rachel Weisz is here.
"Dead Ringers" is technically an adaptation of both Cronenberg's 1988 thriller and the book it is based on, "Twins: Dead Ringers" by Bari Wood and Jack Geasland. However, to call it a direct adaptation of either would be disingenuous. While some elements are maintained sporadically, its primary storylines are different enough for one to argue that it's doing its own things — for example,...

Oscar winner Rachel Weisz, and Rachel Weisz, dominated Canneseries on Saturday, as the audience gathered at the Lumière Auditorium in Cannes broke into spontaneous applause after the first scene of her new show “Dead Ringers.”
Premiering in main competition, the six-episode limited Prime Video series – created by Alice Birch – played with the viewers’ emotions all throughout its first two episodes, eliciting frequent laughs and delivering more expletives than Logan Roy monologues, but also causing a few walk-outs, seemingly provoked by its detailed depictions of childbirth and medical procedures.
“Dead Ringers” sees Rachel Weisz play twin sisters Beverly and Elliot.
A brand new take on the novel “Twins” by Bari Wood and Jack Geasland, later adapted by David Cronenberg in 1988 and starring Jeremy Irons, “Dead Ringers” sees Weisz as ambitious New York obstetricians – and twin sisters – Beverly and Elliot.

Today in remakes we're pretty sure we don't need, Prime Video released a new trailer for their new limited series adaptation of the 1988 film "Dead Ringers." If you're a horror fan, your attention is probably piqued, considering the original film is one of the horror maestro David Cronenberg's oeuvre, but how does it look?
In the sneak peek, we meet Rachel Weisz's version of characters played by Jeremy Irons in the original movie. Weisz plays twin doctor siblings who seem to be going to crazy lengths to change the face of women's healthcare. According to the streamer, the synopsis reads:
A modern take on David Cronenberg's 1988 classic film, Dead Ringers is a limited series starring Rachel Weisz playing the double-lead role of Elliot and Beverly Mantle, twins who share everything: drugs, lovers, and an unapologetic desire to do whatever it takes—including pushing the boundaries on medical ethics...

We'll get it out of the way first — yes, we've heard every joke about "Dead Ringers? Hurr hurr, is this the Radio 4 impressions show?" No, it is not. What it is is a new TV adaptation of David Cronenberg's 1988 thriller, this time starring Rachel Weisz. Check out the trailer…
Weisz here plays Elliot and Beverly Mantle, twins who share everything: drugs, lovers, and an unapologetic desire to do whatever it takes… including pushing the boundaries of medical ethics—in an effort to challenge antiquated practices and bring women’s health care to the forefront. No way there's a downside to that, right?
Well, given that the twins are potentially psychopathic, we're going to say it's a big ol' yes.
This new limited series is created, written, and executive produced by Emmy-nominated writer and playwright Alice Birch, a veteran of shows such as Succession and Normal People. The cast also includes Britne Oldford as Genevieve,...
