The Brat Pack has been through a lot, but time has only strengthened their offscreen friendships.
While discussing Andrew McCarthy’s new Brats documentary at its Tribeca Film Festival premiere on Friday, Jon Cryer had some less-than-fond memories of his Pretty in Pink (1986) co-star.
“When we made Pretty in Pink, we didn’t get along because he was a d***,” said Cryer on a panel Friday with McCarthy, Ally Sheedy, and Demi Moore, according to Entertainment Weekly.
McCarthy admitted to Cryer, “That’s very true,” as Moore disagreed. “Well I didn’t think he was a d***,” she said.
“Well he wasn’t a d*** to you,” Cryer quipped to Moore, whom he dated while working on their 1984 movie, No Small Affair.

The Brat Pack helped define the 1980s, that disillusioned group who navigated Saturday detentions, unrequited love and eventually adulthood. With a rotating group that featured the likes of Molly Ringwald, Andrew McCarthy, Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, and so many more, the Brat Pack label served both as a play on the “Rat Pack” and a fitting stamp that laid out their reputation…And some of them hated it…
During the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of documentary Brats, director Andrew McCarthy – who starred in 1985’s St. Elmo’s Fire and 1987’s Pretty in Pink – said that he originally thought the label was “horrible” but came around to it much later. “I turned 60 last year, and you start to look at your life a little differently. I looked back at this seminal moment in my past, that I’d been dragging around for so many years, and it seemed frozen in the past.

In 1985, young Hollywood actors saw their fortunes change in less than a week. A New York magazine article, referring to them as the Brat Pack, came out on a Tuesday and, by Friday, Andrew McCarthy recalls, our lives were different. This included Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Ally Sheedy, Molly Ringwald, and McCarthy himself. Later, Anthony Michael Hall and Jon Cryer joined this elite group. Hulu’s recent Bon Jovi Documentary has reignited an interest in the music of the 80s and 90s. Now, Brats, Andrew McCarthy’s new Brat Pack documentary promises to delve into the movies of the 80s and a group of actors known as The Brat Pack.
Andrew McCarthy Brat Pack – YouTube Who Coined The Phrase ‘The Brat Pack’?
Before the phrase “The Brat Pack,” actors such as Demi Moore, Andrew McCarthy, Rob Lowe, and Emilio Estevez were actors. However, after that monicker, their lives changed. This happened in 1985 when New York Magazine writer David Blum decided to make a play on the “Rat Pack.” This trio consisted of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr., a group considered the pinnacle of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Although this was a clever label, it wound up haunting many actors in this group. That is because their livelihood as actors was negatively affected by this label.

‘Brats’ Director Andrew McCarthy On How The Initially “Horrible” Brat Pack Label Became “A Blessing”
At the Tribeca Festival world premiere of Brats, actor-turned-director Andrew McCarthy said the Brat Pack Label, which he had “received as horrible,” turned into a “blessing.”
That unlikely arc was actually what compelled him to make the film, McCarthy said Friday night during a post-screening Q&a. “I turned 60 last year, and you start to look at your life a little differently,” he said. “I looked back at this seminal moment in my past, that I’d been dragging around for so many years, and it seemed frozen in the past. And I wanted to bring it up into my present. And by examining it, I could sort of honor it. And if I honored it, it started to turn into a blessing. And then I was fascinated by the journey.”

Andrew McCarthy’s documentary Brats, based on his book Brats: An ’80s Story, offers an intimate exploration of the Brat Pack — a group of young actors who became cultural icons in the 1980s. Through candid interviews and nostalgic reflections, McCarthy delves into the nostalgia of the “Brat Pack” label, coined by journalist David Blum in a 1985 New York magazine article. This term, intended as a playful nod to the Rat Pack of the 1950s and ’60s, had lasting effects on the careers and personal lives of its members.
McCarthy reunites with his past co-stars including Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez, Jon Cryer, Lea Thompson and Timothy Hutton, many of whom he had not seen in more than 30 years. This reunion aims to answer a central question: What did it mean to be part of the Brat Pack? The documentary’s real-time narration by McCarthy adds a sense of immediacy,...

What are we to make of the fact that Andrew McCarthy’s first effort as a documentary filmmaker is a bitter excoriation of the Brat Pack tag that defined him — and is also ostentatiously named after it?
It would be just ducky to be able to report that “Brats” is the inside deep-dive we might wish it to be. But really, it’s a lightly-indulgent passion project that leaves us wanting so much more.
McCarthy begins by noting frankly that “we were who you wanted to hang with, who you envied, who you wanted to party with.” The “we,” of course, also refers to Molly Ringwald, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Demi Moore and Rob Lowe, as well as Pack-adjacent stars like James Spader, Lea Thompson and Jon Cryer. The Brat Pack is a group of actors given that nickname in the 1980s.
Known for appearing in ensemble movies, often together, members of the group didn't join by choice.
A journalist named David Blum initially labeled them that way, which caused many problems for the Brat Pack's members.
The "Brat Pack" Label's Influence on Public Opinion
The term "Brat Pack" was a callback to the Rat Pack, a group of performers in the late 1950s and 1960s.
Those performers included singers Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra.

Not many fans are aware of the treacherous ongoing behind the curtains of Hollywood’s glamorous lifestyle. But the little that does get out becomes colored by rumors, allegations, and whatnot to make the news of the hour seem more saucy. Kevin Costner, for one, has been the hottest topic around for the past year following his exit from Yellowstone, the biggest TV show of the modern era.
Kevin Costner in Yellowstone [Credit: Paramount Network]With Academy Award-nominated writer-director Taylor Sheridan at the fulcrum of Paramount’s largest haul of creative outflow, Costner enjoyed seven whole years of resurrected glory that seems accessible to only a rare handful of A-listers from the ’80s and ’90s. But even with all the bells and whistles that come with being the star of Yellowstone, there were a few shortcomings on Sheridan’s part that seemed too risky to ignore.

Considering Quentin Tarantino’s close bond with Uma Thurman, it was practically destiny that daughter Maya Hawke would work with him. Maybe destiny isn’t the right word…perhaps what we’re looking for here is nepotism, that naughty word in Hollywood that sees children of celebrities being given opportunities because of who their parents are. But Maya Hawke isn’t bothered by nepotism one bit. In fact, she’s well aware that that’s why she was cast in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
In a piece in The Times, Maya Hawke acknowledged that Tarantino most certainly cast her as one of Charles Manson’s followers because of her parents, Thurman and Ethan Hawke. “I’ve been wildly made fun of for this clip when I said, on the red carpet, that I auditioned…I never meant to imply that I didn’t get the part for nepotistic...

Being in action movies is almost synonymous with getting injuries, and like many actors who are quite well-known in this genre, Bruce Willis has had his fair share of pain. The actor reportedly suffered from loss of hearing after performing a stunt in Die Hard, the movie franchise that propelled him to fame.
Bruce Willis in Die Hard / 20th Century Studios
The actor never really talked about this extensively in his interviews so it remained a speculation. He would only mention that he had difficulty hearing, but his daughters Rumer and even Tallulah seemingly confirmed the accident.

Maya Hawke has addressed the “nepo baby” phenomenon head on, saying the reason she was cast in a big film role was totally for “nepotistic reasons.”
Hawke, the daughter of Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, was cast by Quentin Tarantino in his 2019 movie Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. Hawke played Flower Child, one of Charles Manson’s followers, and at the time gave an interview saying she auditioned for the role.
Now she has told The Times of London she was mocked for saying that, and reflected: “I never meant to imply that I didn’t get the part for nepotistic reasons — I think I totally did.”
She added that Tarantino deliberately added her to the cast, which also included Margaret Qualley (Andie MacDowell’s daughter) and Rumer Willis (daughter of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis), and that he was making an effort to “cast a lot of young Hollywood.

When news came out that Bruce Willis was diagnosed with aphasia – and then later frontotemporal dementia – it was heartbreaking for fans of the actor. After all, he gave us so many great performances and stands as one of the best movie stars ever. And like always, whenever we hear positive news, we want to share it with our readers, who are just as big of fans as we are.

As we head into the summer, Hulu is shaping up to be one of the most valuable streaming services to have in the month of June. Not only is one of the best shows on television returning for its third season, but the Disney-owned general entertainment platform is also launching a new comedy banner, and FX goes behind the scenes of one of the most explosive situations in recent sports history.
“The Bear” will drop all 10 of its Season 3 episodes on June 27 in what is undoubtedly one of the year’s most anticipated releases. However, that is not the only hot title coming to Hulu in June, the streamer will also launch its “Hulu’s Laughing Now” brand, the sports-focused series “Clipped” that dramatizes the downfall of Donald Sterling as the owner of the LA Clippers, and the documentary “Brats” that brings together members of the legendary Brat Pack to chronicle their rise to fame.

Seven years have gone by since director Coralie Fargeat made her feature directorial debut with a very cool revenge movie that was appropriately titled Revenge – you can read our 8/10 review of the film at This Link. Now Fargeat is back with an “explosive feminist take on body horror” called The Substance, which stars Demi Moore (Ghost) and Margaret Qualley (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood). The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this month, earning rave first reactions and an 11-minute standing ovation, while also catching media attention with its scenes of Moore and Qualley displaying full frontal nudity…. and now it has earned its rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board. The Substance has been rated R for strong bloody violent content, gore, graphic nudity and language. Sounds good to me!

The Cannes 2024 market saw a thrilling revival with nine movies — including four movies in the main competition — selling to specialized distributors in domestic deals. However, this wasn’t exactly a return to business as normal: The buyers weren’t stalwarts like A24, or Focus, or IFC. Instead Mubi, Metrograph Pictures, and Sideshow (in partnership with Janus Films) established themselves as major buyers.
Mubi bought three titles in the main competition: “The Girl With the Needle,” “The Substance,” and added North American rights on Andrea Arnold’s “Bird.” (It came to the festival with UK rights.) “The Substance” starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley represents a major swing for the upstart, with one source placing the deal in the low-eight figures.

Disappointment hung in the air a few days into the 2024 Cannes Film Festival when no main competition films had universally wowed industry and press. But you have to know where to look, which often means going outside the official selection and into sidebars like Un Certain Regard and Directors’ Fortnight in search of gems.
By the end of the festival, though, more than a few stunners had emerged. The competition’s final days brought a series of potentially historic and beloved-on-the-ground Palme contenders: Mohammad Rasolouf’s searing Iranian drama “The Seed of the Sacred Fig,” Payal Kapadia’s day-in-the-life Mumbai portrait “All We Imagine as Light,” and Sean Baker’s wild and crazy sex worker odyssey “Anora.”
Elsewhere, movies like Matthew Rankin’s Abbas Kiarostami homage “Universal Language” and Mahdi Fleifel’s “To a Land Unknown,” the only Palestinian movie to play Cannes this year, impressed in Directors’ Fortnight, the...

McCarthy reunites with his fellow Brat Packers — his friends, colleagues, and former foes many of whom he had not seen for over 30 years — to answer the question: What did it mean to be part of the "Brat Pack"? It has been too long since Demi Moore has had a role worthy of her talents or made headlines outside of stories about Bruce Willis’ health and G.I. Jane jokes. But now that body horror movie The Substance is making its waves at the Cannes Film Festival, Demi Moore is getting – along with the latest season of Feud – some overdue recognition once more.
Speaking with IndieWire, Demi Moore seemed well aware that this was just the sort of character that can show what she has inside of her. “What I love is this was a rich, complex, demanding role that gave me an opportunity to really push myself outside of my comfort zone, and in the end to feel like I explored and grew not only as an actor, but as a person.”
So, what does Demi Moore hope comes of The Substance as far as where her career is headed?...
