Horace Ové’s masterpiece “Pressure” is getting the spotlight treatment courtesy of Janus Films and the Brooklyn Academy of Music (Bam).
“Pressure” will screen for two weeks as part of the museum’s ode to Black British cinema. The program, titled “Uncharted Territories: Black Britain on Film, 1963-1986” will take place from May 3 through 7, leading up to the new 4K restoration of “Pressure,” widely regarded as the first Black British narrative feature film.
“Uncharted Territories” features rarely screened work from filmmakers of African and Caribbean heritage based in Britain. The series includes “Burning an Illusion,” directed by Menelik Shabazz (1981), John Akomfrah’s “Handsworth Songs” (1986), “Territories” directed by Isaac Julien (1984), and more. The festival is programmed by Ashley Clark.
Screenings of “Pressure” begin May 10 and will continue through May 23. Herbert Norville, Oscar James, and Frank Singuineau star in the feature that follows a London-born teen (Norville), who is the son of Trinidadian parents.

Machine Gun Kelly has shown off a massive blackout tattoo he apparently got “for spiritual purposes only.”
The rapper-turned-pop punk singer debuted the painful-looking ink on his Instagram. The all-black tattoo covers the top half of his upper body, forming around a cross that runs from his chest to his abdomen.
On her own Instagram page, the tattoo artist Roxx called Mgk one of her toughest clients for undergoing the process. “Made some art with @machinegunkelly,” she wrote. “Never met a tougher one.” In the comments, Mgk replied, “thanks for the joy and the pain.”
In an interview with TMZ, Roxx said they started doing six-hour sessions at her LA studio back in mid-December. After 13 sessions, there’s still work to be done to finish the project.

Director Horace Ové, who directed “Pressure” — the first full-length Black British movie — has died at the age of 86. His death was confirmed by his son, Zak, who wrote on Facebook Saturday, “Our loving father Horace, took his last breath at 4.30 this morning, while sleeping peacefully.”
He continued, “I hope his spirit is free now after many years of suffering with Alzheimer’s. You are forever missed, and forever loved. Rest in Peace Pops, and thank you for everything.”
Ové was born in Trinidad and moved to London in 1960. He also spent time living in Rome, where he worked as an extra before returning to the United Kingdom in 1965. Director who examined life in multicultural Britain in pioneering films such as Pressure, a defining work of black British cinema
Horace Ové, who has died aged 86, was the groundbreaking director of Pressure, the first full-length black British feature film, in 1975. Its release was delayed for several years by its backers at the British Film Institute, who feared that the scenes of police brutality might prove incendiary.
The picture charts with patience and fastidiousness the gradual political awakening of Anthony (Herbert Norville), an amiable African-Caribbean school-leaver. Living in west London with his traditionalist parents, he is torn between his white former classmates, who are getting on in a job market that is openly hostile to him, and his militant older brother, who castigates him for failing to adopt the black struggle as his own. It was a conflict that Ové, who arrived in Britain from Trinidad in 1960, knew only too well.

When you hear the hip-hop-styled piano rhythm of “Pof,” the opening cut on Ari Lennox’s second album age/sex/location, the first thing you’ll notice is her voice, flowing full and wry like Erykah Badu circa “On & On.” Yes, this is a real, honest-to-God soul singer: no autotune effects, no flattening croon that approximates laptop software, no double-time rhythm meant to approximate a rapper’s inflections. Lennox isn’t a traditionalist, though, and her music feels utterly modern. Much like Summer Walker, Chlöe Bailey — both of whom guest...

Some of the U.K. entertainment industry’s best-known names have been awarded the country’s highest honors by the Queen.
Outgoing James Bond star Daniel Craig was honored alongside longtime Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson (pictured above with Craig) on the Queen’s New Year Honours list.
Craig, who lives in the U.S., was honored on the ‘overseas and international list’ making him a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (Cmg) — the very same honor the fictional 007 holds in the books. Craig was awarded his Cmg for services to film and theater.
Broccoli and Wilson, meanwhile, were awarded CBEs (which stands for Commanders of the Order of the British Empire) for services to film, drama, philanthropy and skills alongside director Paul Greengrass (“Bourne” trilogy), who received his for services to the arts, and author Anthony Horowitz (the “Alex Rider” series) for services to literature.

The Shea Butter Baby singer tweeted on Nov. 29 that she was profiled by Amsterdam's airport security, writing, "F*ck Amsterdam security. They hate black people."
Ari announced her arrival in Amsterdam early on Monday before her series of tweets began. A Twitter user took screenshots of her other tweets before they were deleted, in which she said, "Wow Amsterdam I'm horrified. I was so happy to travel and this evil woman . . . I've never experienced racism so blatant." She also tweeted: "I just want to go home. I'll never leave my house again."

London punk outfit Chubby and the Gang have released a new song, “Coming Up Tough,” from their upcoming second album, The Mutt’s Nuts, out August 27th via Partisan Records.
With a bruising bass chug and razors edge guitar riff, “Coming Up Tough” finds Walker railing against a criminal justice system that has no interest in actual rehabilitation. The song was inspired by the experience of a family member who, at a young age, was sentenced to 20 years in prison. On the track’s sing-along hook, Walker bellows, “How can...

UK Screen Industries Survey Highlights Socio-Economic Imbalance
A new survey has found that the majority of people working in the UK’s screen industries are from a background that is classified as ‘privileged’. The survey, conducted by the Creative Industries Policy & Evidence Centre and backed by ScreenSkills, analyzed data from the latest edition of the Office for National Statistics’ Labour Force Survey in 2019. Their research found that 53% of those surveyed from the screen industries, including the film, TV and games businesses, were from a privileged background. Looking specifically at the careers of key creative roles, specified here as arts officers, producers and directors, the number rose to 61%. That was in comparison with 38% across all industries. The definition of having a privileged background is those who had at least one parent whose job was a higher or lower managerial, administrative or professional occupation. In contrast, the screen industries employed only 25% from a ‘working class’ background,...

Drake album roll-outs have a certain ritual to them, one that involves Drizzy shedding himself of stray thoughts in the form of a mixtape or an EP. This almost always seems to involve Rick Ross. While the project’s overall formula is by now familiar — Drake admirably tries on some modern rap styles; Drake invites a rising young rapper to go nuts on a beat; Drake and Rick Ross talk about the finer things in...

Conspiracao, Brazil’s multi-Emmy nominated powerhouse indie, is poised to make “Pas de Deux,” a drama series about Bethania Gomes, the first Brazilian prima ballerina of the Harlem Dance Theatre and a current dance instructor there.
Story pivots around the relationship and lives of Gomes and her mother Maria Beatriz Nascimento, a controversial historian and forerunner of the Black feminist movement of ‘70s Brazil who was killed for intervening in a friend’s domestic dispute.
The series could not be more timely given the Black Rights Matter movement that begun in the U.S. and sparked similar protests across the globe.
“Brazil is still very racist even though Blacks comprise around 50% of our population,” said Juliana Capelini, Conspiracao’s Kids & Family executive director who serves as executive producer along with the company’s head of international, Ramona Bakker. A celebration of the pioneering films reflecting black life in Britain over the last 40 years
As UK Black Lives Matter protests roar, and the foulness of the Windrush scandal festers, it is a crucial time to dive into black British history. “Historic” certainly describes the first ever black British feature film: Horace Ové’s Pressure, an absorbing 1976 drama about the everyday struggles of a London-born son (Herbert Norville) of Trinidadian parents.

SEEPeter Gallagher Interview: ‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist’
Gold Derby (Rob Licuria): Jane, you’ve said in the past that you love how this show wears its heart on its sleeve. It’s earnest and joyful and explores empathy, love and lust. Do you still feel that way?
Jane Levy: I absolutely do. It’s been really interesting being on the air during a global pandemic.

“Under Pressure,” the highest-profile international series from Latin America’s biggest TV player, Brazil’s Globo, will turn in Season 4 on the Covid-19 crisis, feature the death of one key cast member, and stress the need for social transformation.
Season 4’s coronavirus focus was announced early May by newspaper O Globo. Further details, revealed by “Under Pressure” lead writer Lucas Paraizo, come as Globo prepares to unleash its latest sales slate of telenovelas, mini-series and series at the 2020 Virtual Screenings from May 12, with one undoubted highlight in “Under Pressure” Season 3.
Breaking years-old time-slot records when it bowed in July 2017 in Tuesday 10.30 pm late primetime – a day and grid berth it will retain for Season 4, said Paraizo – “Under Pressure” (“Sob Pressão”) signaled part of a revolution at Globo as the TV giant embraced the formats and concentration of ideas and length of international drama, but grounding them in an action-defining Brazilian reality.

It was a bittersweet season finale on Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Season 1 Episode 12.
As many predicted, Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Season 1 Episode 11 was simply the calm before the storm.
Zoey woke to the tune of an ominous song and knew something wasn't right.
Everyone seemed to be doing well. Even Mitch was at his best!
But, a sad common misconception is that a sudden burst of energy is a good sign when it typically results in an abrupt ending.
I'm grateful for the realistic timeline of Mitch's disease, and that the writers didn't keep him beyond his time.
It was sad to see him go, and we will certainly miss Peter Gallagher. Maybe if we're lucky, he'll make an appearance in Zoey's dreams or imagination.
Those big musical numbers I've been hearing, this might be totally crazy, but I'm not sure I'm minding them like I used to. I think that they might actually be helping me.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Zoey’s Extraordinary Glitch,” the eighth episode of “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.”
“Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” thrust Jane Levy back into the spotlight as a leading lady in a broadcast series, but the eighth episode of that NBC dramedy, entitled “Zoey’s Extraordinary Glitch,” more literally thrust her into a spotlight as the center of six musical numbers.
“It was a huge source of panic for me because I am in practically every scene of the show, and the few scenes I’m not in, it’s either that I’m getting my extensions redone or I’m rehearsing a dance number or doing Adr. I had zero time off for the entire show, so prepping six musical numbers seemed like an impossibility,” Levy tells Variety. “A lot of these people are trained singers and dancers. This is new for me.

There can’t be many pairs of hands as safe as Don Letts’s when it comes to music knowledge. A cultural polymath who has been front-and-centre of the music scene for over 40 years – as a musician, DJ, radio presenter, Grammy Award-winning music video and film director. Letts was one of the key figures in the introduction of reggae to the punk movement, working particularly closely with The Clash.
He’s returned to reggae, celebrating his first love with a series of podcasts for Turtle Bay, and in his latest Reggae45 podcast, he has zeroed in on reggae’s place in Jamaican cinema. “With this episode Don takes the term soundtrack from a literal point of view, delving deep into the world of film and how the sound has a parallel connection with the story on the screen.”

Pressure is a nail-biting claustrophobic thriller set in a diving bell at the bottom of the sea, starring Danny Huston, Matthew Goode, Joe Cole, Alan McKenna and Daisy Lowe.
Four deep sea saturation divers become stranded 650ft below the surface of the Indian Ocean after disaster strikes their ship. With the air in their bodies compressed to withstand the depth, surfacing too fast without decompressing is unthinkable and will lead to almost certain death. With their diving bell damaged, rescue uncertain and oxygen depleting, they are forced to work together to fight for their survival.

An underwater thriller, titled Pressure, is releasing on several more formats, shortly. The film focuses on the dangers of this activity. This writer knows the dangers of diving, first hand; a diving accident almost ended this life early, several years ago. Another family member lost someone in fourty feet of water, through their diving charter business. Diving is both an unpredictable sport and business. In Pressure, events takes place in over 600' of water. Here, the dangers of diving are extreme. The film stars Danny Huston (21 Grams), Matthew Goode (Watchmen) and Joe Cole. The first exciting trailer for the film is hosted here. From the synopsis, four commercial divers are tasked with repairing an oil pipeline. In the Indian Ocean, disaster looms as their ship begins to sink. They are trapped below the water in a small craft, with only one way out - upwards! But, the deep pressure threatens the bends.
