The trailer pulled in more than 170 million views in its first day of availability, but will fans be able to stream it before the end of 2024?
It’s safe to say that the sequel to Disney’s 2016 animated hit “Moana” has been hotly anticipated by audiences. The teaser trailer for “Moana 2” was released on Wednesday, May 29, and according to the studio, it has racked up 178 million views in its first 24 hours of availability, which is a record for an animated Disney film. Viewers who want to stream it at home are in for a bit of a wait, but I’ll use past Disney releases to try and predict when “Moana 2” will be available to watch on-demand.
Key Details: The “Moana 2” trailer beat out old record-holders like “Inside Out 2,” “Frozen 2” and “The Incredibles 2.” As a Disney animated movie, “Moana 2” will stream on Disney+...

The last few years have been tumultuous for the House of Mouse, as some of their biggest releases didn’t land well among critics and fans. This is especially notable in their animated division, which isn’t exactly thriving, with both Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios failing to live up to their potential with their last major releases.
However, with the sequel to one of the best Disney animated releases of 2010 set to release later this year, which will see Dwayne Johnson return, things might change for the better.

Well, get ready to witness the magic of ‘Lion King’ in a whole new way as Mufasa: The Lion King’s first teaser trailer was recently dropped (April 29). And we got to learn that Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda is in charge of the soundtrack for the live-action animated prequel to The Lion King.
The songwriter-actor, 44, composed the music for a number of films and TV shows, including Moana and Encanto, to refer a few. Not to mention making physical appearances in Mary Poppins Returns, 200 Cartas, and other flicks.

With the arrival of the first trailer for the "live-action" "Lion King" prequel "Mufasa: The Lion King" came news that the film's music is being spearheaded by Lin-Manuel Miranda. In the aftermath of the smash success of his stage musical "Hamilton" (which was eventually released as a movie on Disney+), Miranda seemed to be the guy in Hollywood, working on music for things like "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," "Moana," "Vivo," and "Encanto," just to name a few, while also physically appearing on screen in "Mary Poppins Returns," "In the Heights," "His Dark Materials," and more. The dude was everywhere, and, as often happens when someone becomes overexposed, a backlash began. His past couple of years have been more subdued, and "Mufasa: The Lion King" marks his return to the familiar arms of The Walt Disney Company.

The first teaser trailer for Disney’s “The Lion King” prequel, “Mufasa: The Lion King,” ended with a surprise reveal. There are some novels that were never cut out for the film treatment – tomes so vast or seismic that to attempt to adapt them in the space of mere hours would be folly. But in the age of the big-budget streaming series, those adaptations are finally possible. And so it is that, several decades after being published, Gabriel García Márquez’s legendary masterpiece One Hundred Years Of Solitude is getting its first ever screen version – a 16-episode Netflix series which hopes to do justice to a story beloved around the world. Check out the first teaser here:
It’s a relatively cryptic first look, but for the uninitiated there’s a sense of what’s in store – a lush and vast multi-generational story spanning, well, 100 years. Yes, of solitude. Specifically in the fictional town of Macondo, Colombia in which the Buendía family grapples with its legacy. One Hundred Years Of Solitude...

Back in 1989, Kevin Costner starred in an iconic drama film called Field of Dreams. With a man hearing voices and a diamond vision urging him to make a baseball field, the movie was, no doubt, greeted with love and open arms.

What can Disney say to cinema owners except “you’re welcome“? After all, the studio is revisiting the island of Montunui, where “Moana” takes place, a lot sooner than movie theaters were expecting.
Earlier this year, the studio announced a surprise sequel to the 2016 animated feature for release on Nov. 27. The follow-up was initially commissioned as a television series for Disney+ but it was retooled into a feature film after executives were reportedly impressed by the footage.
Disney shared the first look at the scenes that wowed those Magic Kingdom creatives during its CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas on Thursday. In the music-heavy clip, Moana returns to her home island of Montunui and is greeted with a hero’s welcome. The clip offered a taste of one new song, which appears to be about the wayfinding natives eager to be “back to who we’re meant to be.” Although the...

In 2022, Disney teased fans with blue sky art about what could lie beyond Big Thunder Mountain in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World. Nothing else was said about it until recently, when permits were being filed for the area and the Chairman, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, Josh D’Amaro, made some comments about upcoming projects.
With Univeral Orlando bringing Epic Universe to Florida, Disney really needs to step up its game with new offerings of their own. This would be the perfect time to finalize plans for expanding the Magic Kingdom.
When the blue sky art was shown and announced, the plans included “Coco,” “Encanto,” and Disney Villains.
Since then, “Encanto” has been announced for Disney’s Animal Kingdom’s new Tropical Americas update, which will replace Dinoland U.S.A.
This leaves “Coco” and Disney Villains that could be added to the area. Frankly, Disney’s best bet...

Disney revealed on Monday that its musical animated feature Wish, starring Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) and Chris Pine (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves) garnered 13.2 million views globally in its first five days streaming on Disney+.
This amounts to the third biggest premiere on the service, behind those of Encanto and Frozen 2, with a view being defined as total stream time divided by runtime.
Earlier this year securing a Golden Globe nomination for Best Animated Feature, Wish takes place in the magical kingdom of Rosas, where Asha (DeBose), a sharp-witted idealist, makes a wish so powerful that it is answered by a cosmic force — a little ball of boundless energy called Star. Asha and Star confront a most formidable foe — the ruler of Rosas, King Magnifico (Chris Pine) — to save her community and prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars,...

“Wish” reached 13.2 million views in its first five days on Disney+, where it debuted on April 3 after a November 2023 theatrical release.
That makes the film the No. 3 most-viewed streaming premiere for a Walt Disney Animation Studios film, trailing “Encanto,” which debuted in theaters in November 2021 before streaming on Disney+ that December, and “Frozen 2,” which released theatrically November 2019 an arrived on streaming the following March. Exact viewership data for those titles is unavailable.
This ranking does not include animated films from other Disney studios, however. For example, Pixar’s “Elemental” debuted with 26.4 million views in five days, which was touted as Disney+’s biggest movie premiere of 2023 — live action or animated — and made the service’s top 10 of all time.
At the box office, “Wish” debuted with a weak $31.7 million over the five-day Thanksgiving weekend after originally being projected to earn $45-50 million. For comparison, “Encanto” opened with $40.3 million in five days,...

Lego has been making fantastic building block flower sets lately, with gorgeous bouquets full of daffodils, roses, cherry blossoms, sunflowers, orchids, lotuses and more. But now they have a fantastic Disney-themed set with flowers from the hit film ‘Encanto.’***

Isabela’s Flowerpot has 641 pieces that, when assembled, can be used to build a flowerpot with Lego orchids and other flowers. The flowerpot measures 9 inches high X 6 inches wide X 5 inches deep.

A new rumor from X poster Scott Gustin seemingly indicates that Disney is filing permits for work behind the Magic Kingdom for a future expansion. It could also just be work in the area. But many are thinking Disney is going to try to start work on the “Beyond Thunder Mountain” area they teased at Destination D23 in 2022.
During that presentation, they teased areas for “Coco,” “Encanto,” and Disney Villains. Most people want to see Disney Villains, and with Epic Universe at Universal Orlando bringing the Dark Universe featuring Universal Monsters, it would be a great idea to compete head-to-head.
Currently, “Encanto” has been moved to the blue sky area, replacing Dinoland U.S.A. at Animal Kingdom, which is called Tropical Americas.

Animation has the power to make even the simplest emotions feel as infinite and expressive as our most sacred memories, which — despite the edifying nuance and eye-popping flair of recent films such as “Encanto” and “Across the Spider-Verse” — can make it frustrating that American studios have largely been trending toward overcomplicated plots and realistic design. Sébastien Laudenbach and Chiara Malta’s extremely French “Chicken for Linda” is the clearest possible reminder of what we’ve been missing. It’s about an eight-year-old girl named Linda who wants to eat chicken for dinner. Delightful mayhem ensues.
As in Laudenbach’s “The Girl Without Hands,” all of the characters are traced with thick black lines that lend them the aspirational possibility of a fashion sketch; each of them is filled in with a single swash of color that spills over the charcoal borders of their body whenever they get excited. Linda (voiced by Melinée Leclerc) is yellow,...

This summer, there will be plenty of reasons to visit the Walt Disney World Resort. With new attractions and a returning festival and water park experience, it might be a great time to visit.
We often discuss the expense of a Walt Disney World vacation, but for many, it’s a family tradition, or it’s a lifetime wish come true. Summer 2024 might be a great time to visit the parks as a few “new” experiences are opening, and the popular Epcot Food & Wine Festival is returning.
Here’s what’s new! 1. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.
At the Magic Kingdom, guests can ride the rethemed “Tiana’s Bayou Adventure” attraction. It is the same ride system as “Splash Mountain”, but it has been completely re-themed to Tiana and her friends.
2. Country Bear Musical Jamboree
Another rethemed attraction that is set to reopen this summer is the “Country Bear Musical Jamboree.

Kelly Ripa worked for variously named Live shows on ABC for decades and Disney has now honored her. Of course, the giant and popular companies are closely aligned through acquisition. It’s not the first time that the wife of Mark Consuelos featured in something special for The Walt Disney Company.

Disney has announced that they will bring a new stage show to Epcot this summer called “¡Celebración Encanto!” This limited-time show will run from June 10 – September 6 at the CommuniCore Plaza stage. June 10 is also the date that the final Epcot walls will come down and CommuniCore Hall will open to the public.
The show will run a few times daily and will feature songs from the “Encanto” film. Since Bruno and Mirabel are shown, one of the songs is bound to be “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.”
The new stage and CommuniCore Hall will be a home base for the various festivals at Epcot. Mickey Mouse will also be there for meet and greets with his friends.
At least they finally are getting the walls down completely. The park has been in flux and under construction for several years.
What do you think? Comment and let us know!

“Iwájú,” Disney Animation’s sci-fi long-form series about a futuristic Lagos (currently streaming on Disney+ and coming to The Disney Channel April 22), is a far cry from such culturally diverse features as “Moana,” “Raya and the Last Dragon,” and “Encanto.” This is a Nigerian series — Disney’s first-ever outside collaboration of this kind — told from the Black team at Kugali Media, the U.K.-based Pan-African media company, voiced by Nigerian actors, and with a score from Nigerian composer Ré Olunuga.
“Iwájú” (which loosely means “the future” in Yoruba) began as a Kugali comic book anthology. Kugali co-founders Olufikayo Ziki Adeola, Hamid Ibrahim, and Tolu Olowofoyeku let it be known in an interview they had their sights set on animation and were determined to “kick Disney’s arse in Africa.” This came to the attention of Disney Animation’s chief creative officer, Jennifer Lee, who was so impressed with the...

During its first quarter earnings call earlier this month, Disney announced that the next animated film it will bring to theaters on Thanksgiving will be the sequel to its 2016 hit “Moana,” signaling a renewed push on sequels after years of original animated titles.
But “Moana 2” was originally announced in 2020, under short-lived CEO Bob Chapek, as a streaming series exclusive to Disney+. This change underscores a shifting strategy by Disney and other studios to move films previously planned for streaming to the big screen — in part to calm jittery investors nervous about the thin pipeline of tentpole movies after the Hollywood strikes.
The “Moana 2” re-direct follows Paramount’s “Mean Girls” and “Smile,” and Warner Bros./New Line’s “Evil Dead Rise,” all theatrical releases that were originally intended to be streaming-only.

Updated: Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love brought folks together around the world in its opening frame, singing up a sweet estimated $80M global bow. After coming on strong in early overseas play this week, and as audiences turned a deaf ear to critics, the international box office portion of that is $29M, landing well ahead of expectations.
The Reinaldo Marcus Green-directed biopic is out in 47 overseas markets and on a like-for-like basis including previews is 14% above Elvis and 12% above Rocketman for the same grouping, making it the second biggest music biopic opening behind only Bohemian Rhapsody.
Starring Kingsley Ben-Adir, currently attending the BAFTA Film Awards here in London, Bob Marley: One Love opened at No. 1 in 13 markets and set new opening-day records for a music biopic in the UK and France among others.
In Jamaica, it now holds the record for the biggest film opening of all time.

"Prey" was one of the most pleasant surprises of 2022. The film revived the "Predator" franchise after several years in a much-needed timeout following the disappointment that was Shane Black's "The Predator." In fairness, it seems Black signed up to make a different movie than the one we got, but that's neither here nor there. What's important is that director Dan Trachtenberg delivered the goods with his battle between the alien hunter and some unsuspecting Comanche in the 1700s. Now, at long last, Disney has confirmed that a sequel is coming. And, if there is justice in the world, it will be coming to a theater near you.
Very little has been revealed, although Trachtenberg is once again co-writing and directing a movie in the franchise called "Badlands." It will not be a direct sequel to "Prey" and, instead, will be taking us into the future to follow a different...

In 2020, during the peak of the entertainment industry’s love affair with streaming, a follow-up to Disney’s animated hit “Moana” was destined to become a television series for Disney+.
But like the movie’s shapeshifting demigod Maui, who traverses the seven seas with the eponymous Polynesian warrior, the project has transformed into something entirely new. In a surprise move, the follow-up to “Moana” has been retooled into a feature film, which is set to debut in theaters on Nov. 27.
It’s a boon for cinemas after last summer’s strikes forced studios to postpone plenty of blockbusters to 2025 and beyond. It also signals Disney’s renewed excitement for the big screen at a time when Hollywood has started to prefer the economics of selling movie tickets to a business model that was all about trying to steal Netflix’s thunder. “Moana 2” joins the studio’s upcoming “Alien” spinoff “Romulus” and 2022’s horror film “Barbarian,...

Moana is returning to the big screen. Disney on February 7 announced the surprise release of “Moana 2,” a sequel to the 2016 Disney animated classic.

Disney CEO Bob Iger announced the news on CNBC ahead of the company’s earnings call on Wednesday.
“Moana 2” was previously developed as a Disney+ series, but it will now be made into a feature film with a theatrical release. It’s unclear which (if any) cast from the original animated hit is involved.

The runaway success of Suits on Netflix in 2023 gave the show the biggest year ever in the short history of streaming viewing measurement. It also headlined a banner year for library series (aka shows that ended their run years ago) across a number of platforms: The top 10 overall titles in Nielsen’s year-end rankings are all acquired shows, the first time that’s happened in the four years streaming rankings have been publicly available.
Viewers spent a lot more time on streaming platforms last year than the year before — streaming use rose by 21 percent, according to Nielsen — and licensed shows are responsible for a lot of that increased time. The top 10 original streaming series last year combined drove 133.6 billion minutes of viewing, accounting for about two-thirds of 2022’s top 10 original shows (198.3 billion minutes). Another way to look at the steep decline in originals viewing: Even discounting the blockbuster run of...

Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle, the third Apple Original Films movie to go wide in cinemas, spied an estimated $35.3M global debut through Sunday, including $17.3M from 78 international box office markets. While that makes it the top title worldwide, overseas and domestically this frame, the ultra-expensive ensemble thriller was harshed on by critics and didn’t get folks rushing out to theaters.
Vaughn’s Marv financed Argylle, then sold it to Apple for $200M. Universal came on for the global theatrical release.
As Anthony has detailed in his in-depth analysis, in the wake of Killers of the Flower Moon and Napoleon, and though exhibition the world over desperately needs content, there are questions to be asked about Apple sustaining these mega-productions that don’t produce outsize numbers.

[This story contains mild spoilers for season one of Hazbin Hotel.]
“On paper, there’s a lot of people that might say no to something like this — a very raunchy animated musical comedy world written by a young woman,” Hazbin Hotel star Stephanie Beatriz tells The Hollywood Reporter. But for the Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Encanto actress, showrunner Vivienne Medrano’s “weird, cool, fantastical imagination” has produced a series that is not only “delightfully horny, unhinged and ridiculous,” but uniquely special beyond its “small minutiae of cock jokes.
“It somehow manages to have this throughline of true gay love and this very big idea about whether it’s possible to redeem a soul, to change after being damned for all time,” she says of A24’s first foray into animation and Prime Video’s latest push into the medium’s R-rated adult space. “I just love Vivienne’s world-building.”
Broadway star and lead voice actress Erika Henningsen offers similar praise.

In a report analyzing TV viewership in the U.S. throughout 2023, Nielsen found that “Suits” beat a record previously held by “The Office” for number of minutes watched in a single year.
The legal drama racked up 57.7 billion total minutes watched in 2023, putting it just ahead of the 57.1 billion minutes of viewership accumulated by “The Office” in 2020. When comparing total time watched, though, projects with more episodes and/or longer episodes stand at an obvious advantage. The entirety of “Suits” runs for about 83 hours, which would mean it had an easier time reaching that 57 billion-minute mark than “The Office” did with about 73 hours of content.
Still, both the old record and the new one speak to Netflix’s ubiquity in the streaming landscape. “The Office” aired its final episode on NBC in 2013 but continued to reach a huge audience until it was removed from Netflix at the start of 2021 and...
