Last weekend saw one of the closest box office battles of the summer, with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga only narrowly inching out a victory over The Garfield Movie (by less than a million bucks). With very little in the way of competition this weekend, the orange, animated feline is set to overtake Miller’s post-apocalyptic actioner, thanks mainly to weekend family matinees.
Given how mediocre Furiosa’s box office start was (with many predicting it killed the chance of us ever getting Mad Max: The Wasteland), all eyes will be on the film’s hold this weekend. Ryan Gosling’s The Fall Guy seems to have had a rough run at the box office. Based on the TV show of the same name, the film followed Gosling as a stuntman who gets involved in a conspiracy involving the lead actor of a film directed by his ex-girlfriend, played by Emily Blunt. The action comedy was directed by David Leitch, who last helmed Bullet Train.
Gosling’s film reportedly only earned a meager $145 million against a $127 million budget, making it a box office bomb. So you might have heard: despite being a fantastic spectacle and exactly what you want out of a summer post-apocalyptic race into the Wasteland, Furiosa had a rough opening weekend. Like worst opening weekend for a Memorial Day chart-topper since 1984 “rough.” And a mere four days after this stumble began, the debate’s already arisen on whether this was a one-off disappointment due to being a recast prequel movie, or if it’s a sign of larger systemic issues in the industry.

It was reported earlier that The Garfield Movie would be taking first place during the Memorial Day box office weekend, but now that the official numbers are in, we can confirm that Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga managed to win this weekend and beat out the animated movie as the best movie of this week. Going into the weekend, George Miller‘s prequel, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” had scored impressive reviews after its Cannes Film Festival debut with 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Warner Bros. had the film’s stars, Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, just about everywhere promoting the movie. It ended up making $3.5 million from Thursday previews beginning at 3pm, which was less than the $3.7 previews for “Mad Max: Fury Road” back in 2015. It ended up making $10.2 million on Friday, including those previews, which was not a good sign it might reach the $40 million plus projected in advance. Instead, it ended up with $26.3 million over the three-day weekend and an estimated $32 million including Monday.

Update: Comscore has just released the official box office results for the 4-day Memorial Day holiday weekend, and despite some box office pundits predicting that The Garfield Movie would top Furiosa, in the end the George Miller epic was able to hold on to a narrow lead. Comscore has Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga earning $32 million compared to Garfield‘s $31.1 million. However, it should be noted that The Garfield Movie only cost about a third of what Furiosa did, so it’s unlikely distributor Sony Pictures will chalk up a loss on this one.
Furiosa will depend heavily on foreign receipts if it’s going to break even, with the movie grossing $33 million internationally. “What do you people out there want?!” a Warner Bros. executive might be forgiven for asking after arguably the worst Memorial Day weekend box office in 40 years. Despite Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga opening to glowing reviews, glitzy standing ovations at the Cannes Film Festival, and as part of a revered IP franchise whose last installment is considered one the best summer movies ever—Mad Max: Fury Road is a six-time Oscar winner!—the prequel’s box office still marked the lowest debut for a number one Memorial Day release since Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Having received a rapturous reception a week earlier in Cannes George Miller’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” grabbed a more muted win at the South Korean box office.
“Furiosa” opened with $3.35 million between Friday and Sunday, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). That represented a 39.5% share of the weekend’s total cinema-going market.

Like most, I was absolutely blown away by Furiosa: The Mad Max Saga this weekend. Chris Bumbray perfectly sums up why the film is a great entry into the Mad Max franchise Here. The year was predicted to look pretty bleak with a number of major tentpoles being delayed due to the dual union strikes from the Writers’ Guild and the Actors’ Guild from late last year. However, that isn’t to say that there aren’t still some big releases, as some films were still ready to go for the summer. The past few weeks have seen a steamy character drama with Challengers, an action comedy with two stars from last year’s Barbenheimer sensation with The Fall Guy, the powers of Ryan Reynolds and John Krasinski teaming up for a cutesy family film with If and a CGI-filled action epic from an established franchise with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. On Wednesday, Netflix released the first footage of Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia, the series lead role the Aussie actor has taken over from Henry Cavill, in “The Witcher” Season 4.
In the short clip, Geralt is leading his horse, Roach, through a dark and dreary landscape. We see the back of his iconic white-blond head. And as he turns around, he looks familiar but different.
Cavill departed the hit fantasy series after Season 3, and Hemsworth was brought in to replace him. It remains to be seen if and how Geralt’s new appearance is addressed.
“The Witcher” has already been renewed for a fifth and final season, which will shoot back-to-back with Season 4. Season 4 is in production in the U.K. now.

With the release of “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” on May 10, this year’s Best Visual Effects Oscar race just got a lot more interesting. After just three short weekends in theaters, Universal Pictures is pretty much pulling the plug on "The Fall Guy." The studio has announced that director David Leitch's action/comedy is available to stream on VOD as of today. Indeed, the summer blockbuster starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt can now be watched from the comfort of home, effectively kneecapping its run at the box office. For those who didn't feel the need to rush out to a theater for this one, that might be welcome news. For just about everyone else? It's a sign of a much bigger problem Hollywood must contend with.

Not to sound like a broken record but it was yet another brutal weekend at the box office as May rolls right along. Director John Krasinski's big-budget, family-friendly flick "If" topped the charts with a worse-than-expected opening. Theaters are desperate for a breakout hit given the relatively lackluster performances of other films like "The Fall Guy" in the early going. But, as has been the case so many times in the pandemic era, horror came to the rescue — sort of. Lionsgate's "The Strangers: Chapter 1" had a solid debut, but not so much that it can make up for what was lacking elsewhere. It was also an iffy start for a film that is launching an entire trilogy.
