Weeks after Emmy nominee Giancarlo Esposito teased that he’d be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe “sooner than you think,” Variety can confirm that he will appear in “Captain America: Brave New World,” which hits theaters next year.
Esposito revealed he’d been cast in a Marvel project during a panel at Ccxp in Brazil earlier this month. There he squashed fan speculation that he’d play Professor X in the widely expected Marvel Cinematic Universe version of “X-Men.”

The online retailer/streamer has handed out a series order for Kevin, an animated comedy from Aubrey Plaza and Joe Wengert (Big Mouth).

The next three A24 films that will be available in the IMAX Experience for its monthly screening series are the highly-anticipated director’s cut of “Midsommar” on Thursday, June 20, Mat Whitecross’ “Oasis: Supersonic” on Tuesday, July 16, and Best Picture winner “Everything Everywhere All At Once” on Wednesday, August 28.
The A24 x IMAX Present screening series continues every month for the next year, with IMAX digitally remastering classics from A24’s premium library of more than 140 feature films. Previous remastered and launched films include Alex Garland’s “Ex Machina,” Ari Aster’s “Hereditary,” and the Safdie Brothers’ “Uncut Gems.”

Exclusive: Vincent Pastore, who recurred as Donnie “Glasses” Sisto in Season 2 of Gravesend, has been promoted to series regular for the upcoming third season. Additionally, Vincent Curatola and Talia Shire have joined the cast as series regulars for Season 3.

The big winners out of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival suggest bright times ahead for indie and international moviegoing. Often, the juries at the Cannes Film Festival will try to make a political statement in their choices for the winners of the world’s most famous film festival. Not this year. At least, not in the way they might have.
I rather thought that director Mohammad Rasoulof would take the Palme d’Or for his stirring The Seed Of The Sacred Fig. It deals with the oppressive regime in Iran and the crisis in one family, where the daughters rise up to protest against the wishes of their father, a judge handing out death sentences for those who make their voices heard.

After two weeks of nonstop cinema, the moment of truth finally arrived. The winners of the 77th Cannes Film Festival were announced at a gala ceremony on Saturday night.
The Palme d’Or, the fest’s top honor, went to Sean Baker’s sex worker screwball comedy Anora. Cannes — Nine years after being named one of Variety’s Directors to Watch, Sean Baker won the Palme d’Or for “Anora,” a rowdy whirlwind romance between an exotic dancer (Mikey Madison) and the obscenely rich son of a Russian oligarch (played by Mark Eydelshteyn). Baker is the first American filmmaker to cinch the festival’s top prize since Terrence Malick earned the Palme for “The Tree of Life” in 2011.

George Lucas got candid about criticism of the first six “Star Wars” films during a conversation at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday.
When speaking about the success of the franchise ahead of receiving the festival’s honorary Palme d’Or, Lucas reflected on some of the negative comments he’s received over the years.
“They would say, ‘It’s all white men,'” Lucas said of the films’ critics. “Most of the people are aliens! The idea is you’re supposed to accept people for what they are, whether they’re big and furry or whether they’re green or whatever. The idea is all people are equal.”

The Megalopolis parties and debates last week generously fed Cannes’ appetite for media buzz. Fest-goers were reminded that Francis Coppola’s journey had been a thrill ride for those who witnessed it, invested in it or were impacted by its turmoil.

When it comes to the wild success of the film industry in Hungary, which is the largest production hub in continental Europe and second in Europe only to the U.K., film commissioner Csaba Káel is quick to credit a rich cinematic legacy dating back more than 100 years. “There is a huge tradition,” he said. “We have a special film DNA in Hungary.”
