Recalling the first time one of his films screened at the Cannes Film Festival, a young filmmaker remembered how the duration of the standing ovation the audience gave seemed to grow with every retelling in the media. In the room, he clocked about “a six-and-a-half-minute standing ovation, [but] by the time I had got back to L.A., it had grown to 20 minutes,” he said. “I said: ‘Wait a minute, I’m happy with six. I never even had a two-minute ovation.’ ”
That director was Steven Spielberg. The film was E.T. the Extra Terrestrial, which closed the 35th Cannes festival in 1982. Even back then, they were timing standing ovations — and arguing about just how long a festival audience stayed on its feet clapping. There’s a long a tradition of using that figure, preferably inflated, as a marketing hook in your movie’s rollout.

Irish director Lorcan Finnegan – already behind “Vivarium” – returns to Cannes with “The Surfer.” Starring Nicolas Cage, it follows a man who just wants to surf on a beach next to his old childhood home in Australia. But he is not a local anymore and he will have to fight for it – or lose his mind.
Nic’s character actually references “surfing as a metaphor for life.” Why did you want to explore – and maybe also mock – this philosophy?
I met Thomas Martin, who wrote the film, years ago. We wanted to do something together and then he mentioned “The Surfer.” It was about this one man, trying to deal with who he thinks he is and what he actually wants over the course of five days. It felt very contained, challenging and appealing to me as a filmmaker.

The MCU is awaiting a breath of fresh air with its upcoming slate of films: starting with Deadpool & Wolverine. With universe hopping already a thing, fan theories keep popping up, each with varying degrees of possibility. One of them explores the plotline of Pedro Pascal’s Fantastic Four.

Starring Pascal as Reed Richards, aka Mr. Fantastic, the movie is set to introduce Marvel’s first family into the MCU. However, that’s not the only thing that will debut in the Marvel movie. Fantastic Four is also on the way to bring Galactus, one of the strongest beings from Marvel comics, as the big bad in the MCU.
However, with every big villain, especially of celestial proportions, there comes a question: where were they before, and why didn’t they fight The Avengers?

Sometime ago it was revealed that MCU’s Silver Surfer will be Julia Garner. Julia will be portraying Shalla-Bal, Norrin’s love interest in the comics, but there is a reality in which Shalla serves as the Herald of Galactus as well, Sunglow.
The reactions to Julia Garner’s casting were extremely polarizing with a good part of the community feeling that genderswapping Silver Surfer, whom 99% of people associate with being male, is extremely disrespectful to the character’s legacy. The second part of the fandom however feels that other versions of Silver Surfer – notably female ones, should get their moment of glory.
Now according to most recent rumors posted on private Pateron by Daniel Richtman, Norrin Radd will join Shalla-Bal in ‘Fantastic Four’ setting things right with the fanbase. This points in the direction that their story will be more comic-accurate than expected.

It should be noted, however, that this version will be Shalla-Bal, Silver Surfer’s romantic interest in Marvel Comics. But it seems not everyone is happy with the latest Marvel update on the upcoming flick.
Lakeith Stanfield, best known for his dynamic acting range in films such as Sorry to Bother You and Judas and the Black Messiah, expressed disappointment when Garner was announced as the new Silver Surfer.

Julia Garner, the three-time Emmy-winning co-star of “Ozark,” looks to be joining Marvel’s next big bet, the relaunch of the First Family of Comics, “Fantastic Four.” As per Deadline, she’ll be appearing as the grooviest of villains, the Silver Surfer. But before you can reach for your podcast mic and shout about how producers are ruining movies by making them all woke, please note that a female version of the Silver Surfer, known as Shalla-Bal, does exist in various splinters of the comics’ multiverse. So there.

A new Fantastic Four reboot is currently in the works, and this one seemingly intends to right all the wrongs that the previous films from the original saga did. If anything, it seems to be especially setting a different course for the Silver Surfer than was seen in the previous installments, considering the most recent casting reports.

WandaVision director Matt Shakman is directing the feature, which stars Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing. The Silver Surfer hasn’t been treated well on the big screen. When 20th Century Fox announced the character would be appearing in their 2007 sequel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, well, we’d be lying if we said fans were enthusiastic, given the lackluster reaction to the first film. But, people were happy that Doug Jones would be playing the role in motion capture, even if Lawrence Fishburne doing the voice seemed like an odd mismatch. When it came out in the summer of 2007, reviews were slightly more optimistic than they were for this first film, but it was a box-office disappointment. Yet, we think it’s not quite as bad as people remember as we dig into this episode of Marvel Revisited.

Pretty much the first thing Dan Slott says in our interview is, “I got to write Doctor Who fanfic and got paid for it!”
It’s a feeling that permeates not only our interview but the book Slott is here to talk about, a whopping 66-page special for Titan Comics called Once Upon A Time Lord. Slott seems like a kid who has been locked in the candy store by mistake and intends to scarf down as much candy as he can before someone notices.
But there has been no mistake—Dan Slott is one of the most respected and prolific comic writers working right now, with runs on the Fantastic Four, the Silver Surfer, and, most famously, Spider-Man behind him. Indeed, Slott’s runs include the epic “Spider-Verse” comic event that inspired the wildly successful ongoing movie trilogy.
When thinking of the landmark first season of HBO's crime anthology series "True Detective," it's hard not to think of one major image: Rustin "Rust" Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Marty Hart (Woody Harrelson) in the front seat of a car, speaking of life and death in the language of jaded detectives. Marty's the funny one, but Rust is his wildly depressed and deeply nihilistic counterpart. Their inimitable chemistry is of the "opposites attract" variety, like the HBO drama version of "Lethal Weapon."
The two actors had been paired up before, but never to this effect, and never with this much shared psychological weight. It went way beyond what you could find in films like the execrable "Surfer, Dude" or the "Truman Show" also-ran "EDtv." The benefits of a longer story gave each actor the chance to really dig beneath the superficial appearance of their characters, whether it was McConaughey's demonstration...

Woody Harrelson Thinks Matthew McConaughey Got to Do All the ‘Fun,’ ‘Crazy Sh*t’ on ‘True Detective’
Woody Harrelson thought his work was clogged up with more serious roles leading into “White House Plumbers.”
The “Champions” actor compared the HBO true crime limited series to the cabler’s mystery-thriller anthology show “True Detective,” in which he and Matthew McConaughey starred as a pair of grizzled homicide detectives. Despite only appearing in the first season, both actors serve as executive producers on the series, which returns with a fourth season later this year.
“White House Plumbers” writer Peter Huyck now recalls Harrelson being hesitant to sign on to the series coming off “True Detective.”
“When we all went up to your house to try and convince you to do the part, you said, ‘Look, I did “True Detective” and McConaughey got the cool part, the fun part. He got to do more crazy shit,'” Huyck reminded Harrelson as part of a Vulture interview on “Plumbers.” Harrelson stars...

Matthew McConaughey teased his upcoming Apple comedy series with Woody Harrelson in an interview with Kelly Ripa on her SiriusXM podcast Let’s Talk off Camera with Kelly Ripa. McConaughey revealed the title of the series, Brother From Another Mother, which Apple has described as an odd-couple love story that revolves around the “strange and beautiful bond” between the pair.
McConaughey said Brother from Another Mother will take the shape of “a series about our families that’s based on truth.” He went on to explain, “Where Woody and I are the best of friends, we have different approaches in how we raise our children and how we got about certain things,” and as for their half-hour comedy, “It’s a love story, about us, he and I and our families coming together and the conflicts and comedy that come with it.”

The True Detective reunion is happening, but it won’t be filled with gruesome murders this time around. It’s been reported that Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are set to reunite for a new comedy series for Apple TV+.
The untitled half-hour comedy series is being developed by David West Read (The Big Door Prize) and will find the Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson playing fictional versions of themselves. In real life, the pair have been great friends for years, but the series will put that friendship to the test “when their combined families attempt to live together on Matthew’s ranch in Texas.” The Apple TV+ logline describes the ten-episode series as “a heartfelt odd couple love story revolving around the strange and beautiful bond between Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.” I’m down.

Apple’s bringing it all the way back to 2014. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, the actors who led the first season of “True Detective,” are reuniting for a very different project — an Apple TV+ comedy series where the two Texan stars play fictionalized versions of themselves.
According to Apple’s logline, the untitled show focuses on McConaughey and Harrelson as they bring their combined families together to live under the same Texas ranch, testing the actors’ friendship in the process.
David West Read, whose other Apple TV+ series “The Big Door Prize” recently made its world premiere as part of the SXSW TV selection ahead of its March 29 streaming debut, created the untitled show; aside from “The Big Door Prize,” Read’s also known for writing the book to Broadway musical “& Juliet” and for his work on “Schitt’s Creek,” for which he won an Emmy.

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson will reunite in a new comedy at Apple TV+ with Emmy award winning David West Read attached to create and executive produce.
The 10-episode half-hour series, which is currently untitled, centers on a “heartfelt odd couple love story revolving around the strange and beautiful bond” between McConaughey and Harrelson’s characters. Their friendship is tested, however, when the pair takes their bond to the next level by inviting their combined families to live together on McConaughey’s ranch in Texas.
After most recently gracing screens a dynamic detective duo Martin Hart and Rustin Cohle in “True Detective” Season 1, which premiered in 2014, McConaughey and Harrelson will executive produce alongside Read in addition to starring in the comedy series.

The first promo spot for Woody Harrelson’s fifth stint as an SNL host this weekend takes a turn away from the show’s usual staged bits between host, musical guest and a cast member.
In the spot, Harrelson wanders down a hall lined with photos of other famous hosts but, in typical “Woody” fashion, he seems a little hazy on who each exactly is. Before a photo of Ben Affleck, we hear his internal monologue say “Matt Damon,” and passing an image of Owen Wilson he thinks to himself, “Amy Poehler.” And then, stopping before a shot of Matthew McConaughey, he’s surprised. “Oh, my weed guy,” he thinks.
Shortly thereafter, new castmember Devon Walker approaches Harrelson and things get even weirder.

Many don't win the one-way ticket to WrestleMania's main event at the WWE Royal Rumble, but they can still make a lasting impression.
The Royal Rumble is not only one of the most entertaining gimmick matches WWE has to offer, but it’s a bit of a rite of passage to win. Considering how the winner is supposed to get a title opportunity at WrestleMania, it makes sense that it’s supposed to be yet another way to paint wrestlers as a big deal. It’s an exclusive club, won by just a couple of dozen wrestlers.
There are some wrestlers who never get to win, but they do pretty damn well for themselves. Maybe they last a long time or eliminate a ton of opponents or make it to the very end. Maybe all of the above! This list is about celebrating the Royal Rumble participants...

This week's trip to the multiplex offers a jaunt around the globe where, amongst other things, there's a case of mistaken ethnicity in Boston, Nic Cage gets another wig fitted in Thailand, there's whimsy and surrealism in Scotland and Matthew McConaughey is right at home in Malibu, where he might finally have found something he does well, maybe.

The wave-catching surfer movie "Surfer, Dude" has caught its red band trailer. The new trailer is restricted to those who are underage since it contains some nudity and also shows lots of smoking. Aside from that, the compilation of clips is basically similar to the previous trailer released in July.
Resolving around longboarding soul-surfer Steve Addington, the Anchor Bay Entertainment's comedy starring Matthew McConaughey follows Addington as he returns to his Malibu hometown only to find that the waves have gone flat. In needs of money, he is forced to expand into the world of Virtual Reality Video Games and Reality TV. But, what he really needs is real waves.
A comedy movie from S.R. Bindler, "Surfer, Dude" also features the likes of Woody Harrelson, Willie Nelson, Alexie Gilmore and Sarah Wright. It is expected to make its way to limited theaters on September 5.

Finally, "shirtless" Matthew McConaughey in a role that he was born to play! Surfer Dude is a laid back comedy about a surfer named Steve Addington who returns to his home in Malibu to find that virtual reality surfing is the new "in" thing when there are no waves. Don't think too much about that story, because I think the best way to enjoy this movie would be laid back and stoned out of your mind (note: we don't necessarily condone smoking of any type). Both Willie Nelson and Woody Harrelson also have roles in this as well. To be honest, I think this looks mildly entertaining, which is all I would really be looking for in a movie about a surfer anyway. Give it a shot and check it out for yourself.
