The murderer you’ve been hunting is someone you know. Your husband’s a crooked cop. And then you go into labor while trapped in the wreckage of a car accident. Scrappy PC Jo Marshall (Sophie Rundle) survived all of that in the finale of this six-part mystery thriller, which began with the discovery of a dead man in an underground parking garage after a devastating flood. Jo was obsessed with finding the killer, but in doing so committed crimes of her own and discovered that her colleagues had done far worse. We still have questions about After the Flood, so Rundle agreed to review the evidence. Jo learned that her husband, loving but overprotective Pat, was there when his on-the-take police colleague, Phil Mackie (Nicholas Gleaves) murdered Daniel Eden (Arthur McBain). Not only that, Pat was taking payments from various people for years, too! Can the couple pick up the pieces?...

‘After the Flood’ Premiere Preview: Joanna Recalls Risking Her Life to Save a Father & Child (Video)
On and offscreen loves! Joanna Marshall (Sophie Rundle) gets some much-needed downtime in TV Insider’s preview of After the Flood, premiering May 13 on BritBox. Pat Holman finds a pregnant Jo asleep when he gets home. He treats her to some tasty snacks while they catch up. “Any news on the man who saved the baby?” Pat asks Jo. Jo is stricken by her memories of the flood. “God, he was right under at one point,” she says. “All you could see was just his hands holding this baby up out of the water and then to get to me… [it’s] just the water was so fast, and when he does, he’s just gone. Carried off. Swept away.” Pat chimes in, “Which could have happened to you and our baby.” Jo apologizes to Pat for taking such a risk. “Still, last day on the beat tomorrow,” she adds. ...

For me, 2020 was already a rather stressful year before the Covid lockdowns went into effect for reasons unrelated to the pandemic. Even as misfortunes both personal and professional piled up throughout the months that followed, the virus, funnily enough, was never directly to blame for my woes. Not that I can really complain; I certainly had a far easier go of it in 2020 than other people, especially when it came to my mental health. My years of working remotely and being a borderline hermit were finally paying off!
You could say my experience was a bit like George Clooney's in "The Midnight Sky." Clooney, who also directed the 2020 film, stars as Augustine Lofthouse, a scientist, and the lone person holed up at an Arctic research station that's been evacuated in the wake of a mysterious global catastrophe that's left most of the Earth's surface uninhabitable in the year 2049. Crime dramas can sit on a pretty broad spectrum: some are campy, cosy and even comfortingly formulaic, whereas others make you need to sleep with the light on. The one guarantee is that in the UK at least, there’s such an appetite for detectives and crime stories that TV will never run out of new cases to solve.
We’ve already had some top examples in 2023, from the Happy Valley and Endeavour finales to the excellent Belfast-based Blue Lights, but there are plenty more fresh crime dramas on the way, from police procedurals to true crime and murder mysteries. See what’s coming up below.

Happy Valley is wasting no time getting down to the good stuff. Sally Wainwright’s multi Bafta-winning crime drama has only been back on screens for a total of three hours and already it’s delivered more glorious tension and high drama than most shows do in a season. Sergeant Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire) may be ready to hand over her badge in retirement, but the seedy criminals of West Yorkshire aren’t ready to let her go just yet. Here’s your recap of everything that went down in episode three…
“Hiya!”
A lesser show would make us wait for answers, but this is Happy Valley and satisfaction is guaranteed. This episode picks up from where the last left off: in a cafe in Sheffield where Catherine has just confronted Clare (Siobhan Finneran) about secretly taking Ryan (Rhys Connah) to see his good-for-nothing father Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton) in prison.

Steven Knight's "Peaky Blinders" is a compelling story about a street gang in Birmingham. It's a gangster drama, so naturally, there's blood, smoke, and fire. There are outbursts of extreme violence when rival gangs are up against each other; there's tragedy, hope, and ambition, among different themes. At times, "Peaky Blinders" can also be a dark show to watch, but none will deny it has a solid aesthetic. Perhaps that is because of the Shelby family's well-tailored, expensive-looking tweed suits, the portrayal of its characters, or the depiction of Birmingham in post-war Britain — or perhaps it is all of it.
The show is rooted in gangster mythology, and when combined with its classic stylized aesthetic, it feels like a period drama and yet very contemporary. It's bold and confident, much like its characters. The music and visuals go hand in hand, and Knight's flawless writing truly makes "Peaky Blinders" one of a kind.

It might be easy to think that "Peaky Blinders" is a rip-roaring gangster story, exploring the rise (and likely fall) of Cillian Murphy's Tommy Shelby as leader of the most fearsome collection of petty thieves and bloodthirsty criminals in early 1900s Birmingham. It certainly is that, to be sure, but that description doesn't quite manage to do justice to the collection of fascinating characters caught up in the wake of Tommy's ceaseless ambitions to grow his organization from the mud-soaked grime of horse racing to the upper echelons of political influence in Parliament. No, it'd probably be more accurate to call this popular (and recently concluded) show a family drama.
None know that better than Sophie Rundle, who has portrayed Tommy's sister Ada Thorne since the inaugural season. Initially wanting nothing to do with her brother's illegal activities or even the family name itself, Ada has since grown into...

English actress Sophie Rundle was fresh out of drama school when she was cast as Ada Shelby in BBC's "Peaky Blinders." Initially, she didn't know what to expect: the series told the story of a real-life Birmingham-based street gang that would wear caps implanted with razors in them. Tommy Shelby, the protagonist, was a former World War I veteran who was dedicated and worked to raise his family in the crime world.
Rundle played Tommy's sister Ada, a member of the "Peaky Blinders" and the Head of Acquisitions of Shelby Company Limited. Although Rundle's screen time considerably declined after her character married the communist agitator Freddie Thorne and left home, her values, and her stubborn, feisty personality, remained a delight to fans. There's also something innately relatable about watching her put up a fight with her older brothers, regardless of having to sometimes cede to them.

Sally Wainwright has not given up on Gentleman Jack Season 3. The show’s creator says her team is brainstorming ways to get a third season made following Gentleman Jack‘s cancellation at HBO. According to Wainwright, BBC is still keen to make more episodes (the show was a collaboration between BBC and HBO), but they need another network to help the show stay globally accessible. Gentleman Jack stars Suranne Jones (Vigil) as Anne Lister and Sophie Rundle (Peaky Blinders) as Ann Walker — the first women to ever marry in England. The drama brought the real-life 1800s romance to life with the help of Lister’s extensive diaries, which were meticulously detailed and partially written in code. Season 1 tracked the events leading up to Anne and Ann’s (nicknamed Adne in Season 2) secret wedding, and then Season 2 showed their new married life. The period drama boasts an avid fanbase thanks to...

The series, which was a co-production between HBO and the BBC, came to a grinding halt after HBO pulled the plug.
Series creator, Sally Wainwright is hopeful the show could return in some capacity down the line.
In an interview with RadioTimes.com, Wainwright said that "there is a desire to go on with it amongst quite a lot of people."
The main hurdle standing in the way of a pickup is that an international partner would have to be found to carry the series globally.

"Gentleman Jack" is a rare gem. Even in the streaming age, the TV landscape isn't exactly overflowing with lesbian romances, certainly not those based on real-life lesbian trailblazers like Anne Lister. But for two seasons, "Gentleman Jack" achieved greatness, telling the story of the woman that historians often refer to as "The First Modern Lesbian," as she traveled the world, built businesses and fell in love with a young heiress named Ann Walker (a magnetic Sophie Rundle). Their love story is all kinds of messy and the show deftly balances situational hilarity, the sincerity of their love, and the very real dangers of being themselves in...

Suranne Jones and Sophie Rundle, stars of HBO’s Gentleman Jack, are sharing their thoughts on HBO’s cancellation of Sally Wainright’s period drama after two seasons.
A co-production with BBC, Gentleman Jack starred Jones as Anne Lister and Rundle as Ann Walker. In Season 2 of the series, from Lookout Point, Anne and Ann set up home together at Shibden Hall as wife and wife, determined to combine their estates and become a power couple.
“While it is sad news Gentleman Jack will not be renewed, this show has brought so many together, enabled people to share their stories, brought joy, emotion and creativity, and gave me a real connection to you as its audience,” Jones said in an Instagram post accompanied by an entertaining blooper reel. “Anne Lister now has a statue in the Piece Hall. There will be no third season for HBO‘s period drama Gentleman Jack, as the network has canceled the Sally Wainwright series just a month after airing Season 2. As reported by Deadline, the series, which is a co-production with the BBC, will not be returning to HBO. Based on the collected diaries of industrialist Anne Lister, Gentleman Jack starred Suranne Jones (Vigil) as Lister and Sophie Rundle (Peaky Blinders) as her love interest, Ann Walker. The first season followed Lister and Walker as they embarked upon a secret relationship, which Lister records in a cryptic diary. Season 2 saw the couple set up home together at Shibden Hall as wife and wife, with hopes to bring their estates together and become a power couple. “HBO will not be moving forward with a third season of Gentleman Jack,” HBO told Deadline. “When we began this journey more than five years ago, we...

"We are the only people in the whole world who want us to be together," Anne Lister (Suranne Jones) tells her wife, their hands clasped together. Ironically, there's a pretty sizeable viewership that would disagree (all we want is for them to find happiness together) but for the past eight episodes, they've had every reason to believe that sentiment true.
Since the season 2 premiere, Ann Walker (Sophie Rundle) has endured japes from her wife's unwelcoming friends, venom from her own relatives, stares from strangers, anonymous taunting and so much...

Initially, the second season of "Gentleman Jack" felt so much lighter than the first. There were moments in the debut season when Ann Walker's (Sophie Rundle) mental health and interfering family members felt like insurmountable issues that even Anne Lister (Suranne Jones) couldn't overcome. But against all odds, the two women pushed through together and emerged victorious. The world seemed to open up before them, as the life they envisioned together finally came to fruition — and sure enough, the second season offered blissful moments by the fire, tender journal entries, a euphoric hillside painting scene, and...

While it's certainly painful to watch Anne (Suranne Jones) dive back into her past, unraveling her feelings for Mariana (Lydia Leonard) was always an inevitability. By all accounts (aka the thriving lesbian inner circle they have yet to welcome Miss Walker into), Mariana was the first great love of Anne's life. They spent years as a couple and for a long time anticipated a life together. Even after Mariana's marriage, they couldn't let one another go. But now Anne wants to move on and with Anne Walker (Sophie Rundle) she's found someone she can love enough to envision a new future....

Anne Lister (Suranne Jones) has always been a chaotic force of nature, but in the second season of "Gentleman Jack," it almost feels like she's going out of her way to be as reckless as possible where both love and business are concerned. You would think that starting her life with Ann Walker (Sophie Rundle) would promise some stability but Miss Lister has quite a talent for making the ground beneath her shaky. Every episode brings about some new business venture or investment, and while all this talk of coal, canals, and railways isn't the easiest to follow, all the concern...

“Gentleman Jack,” HBO Max’s 19th century-set show about real life LGBTQ figure Anne Lister, who lived an unconventional life for a woman due to her focus on business, involvement in politics, and more-than-amateur medical experience, and who kept meticulous, coded journals about her lesbian relationships, is back.

It’s been three whole years since the first season of HBO’s Gentleman Jack premiered. To refresh your memory, the 1830s-set British period drama, which follows the fascinating life of lesbian Anne Lister — based on Lister’s real-life diaries — left off with Miss Lister and her paramour Ann Walker (Sophie Rundle) making private vows to each other in church, in what is essentially an unofficial marriage ceremony. With such a beautiful resolution and such a long wait, viewers may have gotten comfortable with the Season 1 finale as a permanent ending. But very quickly Season 2 proves that Miss Lister and Miss Walker’s romance is a rich subject matter of which we have only just scratched the surface. Picking up weeks after the wedding, Miss Lister prepares for Miss Walker to move into Shibden Hall, following a period in which Miss Walker finally got the help she needed for her...

Warning: contains spoilers for Peaky Blinders season six episode 3 ‘Gold’.
Is this what it takes for Tommy Shelby to learn that he has limitations? What a cruel humbling. Cruellest of course, for Ruby – an innocent victim of being the daughter of “a character in a novel” – and for Lizzie. Natasha O’Keeffe was stunning in that final monologue, collapsed in grief and rage. The women of Peaky Blinders – Ada, Esme and Lizzie – stunned throughout this episode. Talk about gold.
Take Ada, for one. Clearly, Tommy should leave her in charge more often. Ever since she rolled a pram into the middle of the shoot-out between their gang and Billy Kimber’s and told the men to go ahead and fire but she and the baby were going nowhere, we’ve known that Sophie Rundle’s character had swagger, but we’ve never seen so much of it in one go. ‘Gold’ luxuriated in Ada Shelby,...
