Summer is no time for sadness, with new shows debuting throughout the season. With the official 2024 Emmys deadline now in the rearview, June is when the TV calendar resets, with new and returning shows now eligible for next year’s awards ceremony… but we’re getting ahead of ourselves.
June’s new TV lineup includes a handful of book adaptations, including Hulu’s “Queenie” starring Dionne Brown, Apple’s “Presumed Innocent” with Renate Reinsve and Jake Gyllenhaal as well as Eva Longoria-starrer “Land of Women,” and Prime Video’s “My Lady Jane,” based on the YA series The Lady Janies (and loosely on some Tudor history… very loosely). Shows like “Clipped” and “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld” stem from books about real people and events, while on the reality front there’s also Peacock’s “Queer Planet” and a docuseries about the Dallas Cowboys’ Cheerleader squad on Netflix. Some movies and TV shows will inevitably slip through cracks and you may never remember them again.
2024 alone has been a year of many exciting thriller, sci-fi and horror premieres, so it is no wonder the viewers simply didn’t have enough time to watch them all. Amazon Prime’s action thriller Road House, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, is one of those releases you may want to come back to.
Is Road House (2024) Good?
Released back in March of this year, Road House stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Dalton, an ex-UFC fighter who takes a job as a bouncer at a road house in the Florida Keys. As you can imagine, things pick up later to put Dalton right...

Image Source: Amazon While the late Patrick Swayze will undoubtedly be remembered most for Dirty Dancing and Ghost, one of his personal favorites — and one that has picked up a sizable following over the years — was Road House. The 1989 film, which spawned a remake (starring Jake Gyllenhaal) that was released earlier this year, featured Swayze as a bouncer at a small-town bar in Missouri. At the time of the film’s original release, Swayze said he was attracted to the role because he could identify not only with the character, but also with that small-town way of life. It took Robert Downey Jr. a while to completely understand the ways of an iconic director – David Fincher.
David Fincher is one of the greatest filmmakers alive today thanks to his incredible eye for detail and dark, intelligent narratives in his films. He began his journey as a director with Alien 3 and then went on to blow everyone away with his 1995 film, Seven. He has also directed Gone Girl, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and Fight Club, a film that is nothing short of a cultural phenomenon across the globe.

However, it is his 2007 release, Zodiac, that remains one of our all-time favorites. The film follows the story of the infamous Zodiac Killer and stars Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Ruffalo along with Jake Gyllenhaal. Now, David Fincher is notorious for doing retakes until the scene reaches perfection.

Rick and Morty has amassed a strong fan following, particularly among the millennials. However, many would be surprised to know that the sci-fi adult animated show shares a notable connection with Christopher Lloyd’s Back to The Future series. The movie follows an eccentric older man and a teenager who embark on a time-traveling adventure with the help of their hi-tech vehicle.
Rick and Morty in Season 7 | Adult Swim
Primarily due to its character inspirations and thematic elements, the animated show was conceived out of Lloyd’s movie parody, The Real Animated Adventures of Doc and Mharti. The film franchise star, in an old interview, addressed the same, confirming how the animated series shares a great connection with the sci-fi trilogy.
Back to the Future Star Christopher Lloyd Got Candid About the Movie’s Connection With Rick and Morty
Since its premiere in 2013, Rick and Morty has developed a significant cult following.

Hollywood is bursting with "what if" scenarios -- "Sliding Doors" moments where actors, writers, directors, and craftspeople almost made a certain project, or almost walked away from a job that would become huge for their careers. With the benefit of hindsight, these situations are often fun to think about -- especially if, as in the case in today's example, A) the two people competing for a part were vying for a memorable role in a well-known movie, and B) they both went on to have great careers, so the thought exercise doesn't feel mean-spirited or just plain sad.
In an oral history of "Zoolander" published by Vanity Fair in 2021, "Zoolander" writer, producer, director, and star Ben Stiller explained how Owen Wilson nearly didn't end up playing Hansel, Derek Zoolander's rival-male-model-turned-friend, and identified the surprising actor who almost took the role instead:

Every time a TV or movie crew is asked to adapt a popular novel, there is a chance that it will go horribly wrong. While some novels are easier to retell in new formats, others are impossible to make into a coherent script without changing too many things or adding too many new plots to fill in the holes.
If there's already a perfectly good adaptation of a novel, many believe it's better to leave it alone as a good example. In the case of Scott Turow's Presumed Innocent, however, the story ended up looking too good to leave behind.

Although Scott Turow's 1987 novel Presumed Innocent has already been adapted into the 1990 film of the same name starring Harrison Ford, Apple TV Plus has decided to repeat the success and give the book another shot. In this version, the story will be adapted into an...

Network executives once came to the upfronts on a mission to get advertisers excited about a handful of new series coming in the fall. This year, TV’s big players took a T-shirt cannon approach.
Every one of the major presentations during the May 13-15 sprint in midtown Manhattan — NBCUniversal, Fox, Disney, Amazon, Warner Bros. Discovery and Netflix — emphasized the breadth of the company’s content offerings. Call it the everything-everywhere-all-at-once strategy for the streaming age.
As always, common themes emerged across the week. “Connections” was the buzziest of buzzwords used by executives pitching their hearts out from the stage. Without question, the song of Upfronts ’24, the one heard at most if not all events, was Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ’Em.”
After sorting through the firehose of shows and spin, here are a few trends that stood out this year.
1) Star-Power Surge
Last year, the writers strike kept boldface names from appearing at the upfronts.

Jake Gyllenhaal is ready for his close-up… on the small screen this time. Yep, that’s right. He can no longer be considered one of those movies-only actors resisting the television world anymore because he’s starring in Apple TV+‘s adaptation of Presumed Innocent. The crime thriller features him in the lead and looks to keep audiences on their toes ’til the end — at least, those who haven’t read the book or seen the previous adaptation, but more on that later. Here’s everything you need to know about Presumed Innocent. What is Presumed Innocent about? Presumed Innocent is a crime thriller based on the 1987 novel of the same name by Scott Turow. The story centers on a Chicago prosecutor named Rožat “Rusty” Sabich (Gyllenhaal), who is accused of murdering his colleague Carolyn, with whom he was secretly having an intimate relationship, despite being married. Plus, per the streamer’s description,...

Saturday Night Live wrapped up its 49th season last week with one of its strongest recent episodes, thanks in large part to (third time) host Jake Gyllenhaal. So it’s hardly surprising that the Road House actor’s name is among those that have been submitted for Emmy consideration in the Outstanding Guest Actor In a Comedy Series category. But he’s far from the only recent host whose name is in the mix.
On Tuesday, Variety reported that at least 17 of the 20 individuals who hosted SNL this season have been submitted for Emmy consideration. If that seems like a lot of people competing for the same awards, that’s because it is: it’s the highest number of hosts to submit in the past five years.
Here’s who’s vying for an Emmy for showing off their comedic chops this season: Nate Bargatze, Josh Brolin, Timothée Chalamet, Pete Davidson,...

Apple TV+ has now released the new tense trailer for Presumed Innocent, the limited series coming to the streaming service courtesy of David E. Kelley and J.J. Abrams. The legal drama has Jake Gyllenhaal in for the fight of his life as he defends himself from allegations of murdering a peer with whom he shared a complicated entanglement. It doesn’t look good for Gyllenhaal’s character, as a plethora of evidence is working against him, and he can only continually profess his innocence.
The official synopsis reads,
“Gyllenhaal is set to star as Rusty Sabich, a prosecutor whose world is upended when a close colleague is murdered — and the evidence begins to point to Rusty himself. The role would be his first ongoing part in a TV series. Presumed Innocent was previously adapted for a 1990 feature film that starred Harrison Ford as Sabich, along with Bonnie Bedelia and Raul Julia.

In Apple TV+’s upcoming limited series, Jake Gyllenhaal hopes to be Presumed Innocent and not proven guilty.
Based on the New York Times bestselling novel of the same name by Scott Turow — which of course previously begat the 1990 Harrison Ford/Greta Scacchi/Bonnie Bedelia film — the eight-episode series covers a horrific murder that upends the Chicago Prosecuting Attorney’s office when chief deputy prosecutor Rusty Sabich (played by Gyllenhaal) is suspected of the crime. “The series explores obsession, sex, politics, and the power and limits of love, as the accused fights to hold his family and marriage together,” reads its official description.

Henry Cavill’s professional relationship with director Guy Ritchie has been a subject of interest in recent times. Previously collaborating twice, in the 2015’s The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and 2024’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, Cavill and Ritchie met with rather underwhelming performances of their films at the box office, both times.

OpenAI is pausing the use of a voice named Sky that is part of a new demo of ChatGPT 4.0’s Voice Mode. The emotive voice has been called out for sounding a little too similar to Scarlett Johansson’s A.I. character from the 2013 Spike Jonze film Her, and Johansson herself has now stated she is “shocked, angered and in disbelief” that the tech company would use “a voice that sounded so eerily similar to mine” — especially after she declined their offer to hire her to be the voice.

This weekend, the 49th season of "Saturday Night Live" came to an end. Typically, the season finale is chock full of guest stars, and usually a big name or former beloved cast member takes the stage in Studio 8H at 30 Rockefeller Plaza for hosting duties. This time, it was the former, with "Road House" remake star Jake Gyllenhaal returning for his third time hosting the late night sketch series.
For those keeping track, Gyllenhaal's hosting duties have Taylor Swift fans buzzing, because the musical guest was "Girl Meets World" star Sabrina Carpenter, who has been opening for Swift on the international part of her Eras Tour (now available to watch on Disney+), and there's that whole drama between Gyllenhaal and Swift that resulted in a 10-minute hit song. Speaking of musical guests, Gyllenhaal got musical in his own right as he sang a Boyz II Men cover about the honor...

In these trying times, “Saturday Night Live” wants character actors of all stripes to be extra careful when walking around New York City — but Jon Hamm can relax.
10 days after Steve Buscemi was hospitalized after being unexpectedly punched in the face, NBC’s late-night show mocked the situation with a lighthearted sketch about protecting our actors who are recognizable but not necessarily household names. Host Jake Gyllenhaal appeared as an NYPD officer urging actors to stay safe while briefing reporters about the issue.

When it was released in January of 2001, Richard Kelly's bleak time-travel psychological drama "Donnie Darko" caused a notable stir. The title character, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, is a teen struggling with schizophrenia in 1988, a time when Reagan's great Conservative revolution was drawing to a close and adults clung to suburban conformity as it crumbled under them. Donnie is obsessed with time-travel and regularly hallucinates a vicious, strange anthropomorphic rabbit monster named Frank (all while attempting to socialize at school and foster a romance with a classmate played by Jena Malone). Patrick Swayze appears as a cheesy self-self guru, Drew Barrymore plays one of Donnie's teachers, and Maggie Gyllenhaal plays Donnie's sister.
By turns psychedelic and weirdly moving (in a Goth sort of way), "Donnie Darko" quickly became a cult hit and rotated directly into the local midnight movie circuit, attracting a wide swath of misfits and night people.

"Saturday Night Live" might be a late-night show in New York, but since it airs before 10 p.m. in some regions it has to abide by the FCC's quirky rules on "indecent and profane" content. Swearing is a capital crime; in 1981, Charles Rocket was fired immediately after he accidentally dropped an F-bomb on air. Sex and nudity are also big danger zones; the 1988 sketch "Nude Beach" with Matthew Broderick, in which the word "penis" is uttered dozens of times, was permitted to air following a fierce debate within NBC's Broadcast Standard Department, and resulted in 46,000 complaints and the loss of multiple sponsors.
Fortunately for this "SNL" season 49 finale sketch, which stars guest host Jake Gyllenhaal as Fred in a twisted spin on "Scooby-Doo," violence on TV is basically a blood-soaked free-for-all with almost no limits.

Jake Gyllenhaal is arguably one of the bravest actors of his generation, venturing into different genres and attempting risky projects throughout his career. As a child actor, he gained prominence in the role of Homer Hickam in 1999’s October Sky. The young actor would go on to star in one of the most influential films of the 2000s Donnie Darko.

Jake Gyllenhaal hosted “Saturday Night Live” last night and the show’s most memorable sketch saw Gyllenhaal playing an iconic pop culture character: Fred from “Scooby-Doo.”
It was titled “Scooby-Doo and the Mystery of the Shadow Phantom,” with Gyllenhaal starring alongside musical guest Sabrina Carpenter as well as “SNL” cast members Sarah Sherman, Mikey Day, and Andrew Dismukes. While it starts like a traditional “Scooby” adventure, with the gang unmasking a mystery, it soon turns into a rated “R” bloodbath.
After Fred reveals the Phantom to be Old Man Franklin, he takes things a step too far and literally rips Old Man Franklin’s face clean off. From there, the Mystery Inc. gang is dispatched in increasingly gruesome ways, while Scoob chows down on the Old Man’s face.
The gore effects are largely digital, but we’ll let it slide.

On Saturday night, Jake Gyllenhaal took the stage at Studio 8h to close out Saturday Night Live Season 49, and, clearly, he was having a blast. There really were no duds in the array of sketches, and Gyllenhaal was a key player in most of them, showing up every time with enough vim to be the constant centerpiece. Plus, the variety of sketches was vast, which meant Gyllenhaal also got to show off his many strengths as a performer, from his surprisingly strong singing voice to his clammy New York City accent impression and beyond. Here are some of the best moments of the episode. In his monologue, he went hard on the humble humor about the fact that he was hosting the Season 49 finale instead of Season 50. He also reminded everyone that he has a nice set of pipes with a rendition of Boyz II Men’s “End of the Road.

Ang Lee is regarded as one of the most distinguished filmmakers in the Hollywood industry. Having 9 Academy Award nominations and three wins, he already has a fair share of wins and perhaps even more to come. With such understanding and dedication to his movies, the filmmaker has been fighting against any norm thrown at him for as long as he can remember.

Despite holding so many wins in his pocket, regardless of it being an Oscar, a Golden Globe, or anything else, one loss is like a thorn in his back that forever hurts him. He has made many movies throughout his career but one stood out like no other. Starring Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Williams, and Anne Hathaway, Brokeback Mountain became the one that slipped away.

The Saturday Night Live tradition continues!
As in recent finale episodes, Michael Che and Colin Jost wrote each other’s jokes during the Weekend Update segment in this year’s Season 49 finale. The idea is “to give each other fun jokes, almost supportive jokes, that would never ruin our summer or career,” Jost explained. Though, of course, the exercise devolved into the most giggly affair as the two comedians read provocative lines that would otherwise be deemed tasteless.

Well, Saturday Night Live closed out its 49th season last night commendably pushing the boundaries of comedy invention, female-singer lingerie, and what used to be acceptable language on broadcast television.
Commendable, because much of the season finale was broad and funny and that ought to be the real measure of standards and practices for the longest-running sketch-comedy show in entertainment history.
If you’re funny, you ought to get to push all you want.
This was another in a recent string of SNL episodes that generated a good percentage of high-decibel laughs. And if anyone was unaware that it was the season finale and the season was the 49th, the host, Jake Gyllenhaal, got the message across with unfettered emphasis in his monologue, which featured a song parody about it being the “end of the road” for this season.
The tune even highlighted some historical and cultural benchmarks for the...

There are a plenty of longtime Saturday Night cast members, yet there were no big exits — or hints of departures — on tonight’s Season 49 finale of the venerable NBC late-night program.
No SNL veterans were tearing up at the end of their sketches like Kate McKinnon did in the 2022 finale, it was all smiles and fist bumps at the curtain call, and, after another brutal joke swap, Colin Jost and Michael Che wrapped their 10th season together on Weekend Update by wishing everyone a great summer.
This was to be expected, given that no one from this year’s 17-strong troupe would willingly miss next year’s big celebrations – The Big 50.
Host Jake Gyllenhaal set the stage for what is to come in his opening monologue, noting that the finale was “the last episode before the big anniversary season.”

Saturday Night Live host Jake Gyllenhaal went through a maze of Southwest employees–and one Hudson News cashier, mistakenly–all in an effort to simply cancel his flight.
While being transferred to nearly ten different people, Gyllenhaal encountered customer service representatives who mispronounced his name all sorts of ways, those with odd racial views, those who demanded something in return, and unreasonably long and indecipherable audio-only confirmation codes, among other things.
Gyllenhaal ultimately was transferred by a trainee (Devon Walker) to a Hudson News cashier (Andrew Dismukes), before being reconnected...
