Aberdeen (2000)
enigma
it's hard to describe this film....kind of slow and dull at times, and yet it definitely leaves you with an impression. What the director is trying to get across i cannot say for sure, but what i can say is that this film conveys, almost imposes a certain somber mood upon the audience, especially with the use of color (primarily blue, gray, and everything in between). It reminds me of another film called il mare. But anyways, the acting is excellent. I had never heard of Lena Headey before but she was absolutely fantastic. It's unfortunate how acting of that quality is in short supply in the U.S. Also, i thought it was a nice touch how the director began the film with Kaisa being the responsible, well dressed one while the father was the slovenly drunk and then reversing the roles towards the end of the film. Although i am still thinking through the meanings....
Felicidades (2000)
hopeless movie about hope
crazy dumb. Think pulp fiction with stale plots. This film aspires to convey a sense of hope in the face of despair, but falls short. Real short. I highly recommend this film to people having trouble sleeping because i have come to find (it took me 3 days to watch the entire thing) that this piece helps quite a bit.
Cyrano de Bergerac (1990)
the nose knows
French films are always high on the style factor, especially period pieces, and this one is no exception. High style, crazy costumage, the works. But that is nothing without a great story, and this film truly delivers. And Depardieu does an INSANE amount of talking, so if your french needs a little dusting, watch this a few times and it'll help.
Nuovo Cinema Paradiso (1988)
a classic
Jjust saw this again a few days ago...this is what movies are all about. I remember seeing this for the first time about 5 years ago, sleeping through most of it (because i was tired...NOT because it was boring) and still loving it. I have seen some of Tornatore's other work, and this is by far his best. That dude Alfredo looks like Walter Matthau.
Yeopgijeogin geunyeo (2001)
great movie
i have to say this movie is a perfect blend of romance and comedy. It has a really unique plot that incorporates everything from the military to religion to gross out humor. Highly recommend this movie... i first heard about this movie when dreamworks purchased the rights to remake it into an american film, and i can see why. Just hope they don't crap it out factory style.
